Wolfram Forster grew up in Berlin during the reign of Hitler. The Battle of Berlin was a conflict of unprecedented scale. In 1941 when Germany invaded the Soviet Union Vassili Subbotin was caught up as an ordinary soldier in the Red Armys great retreat.
