Excerpt from Farm Bookkeeping and the Federal Income Tax Any accounting or bookkeeping system is only a tool or a means to an end. Record keeping is worth while to the extent that it provides useful answers to questions about the business. Useful answers are given only if the system provides for consistent treatment of like items and like situations. This is important for any management analysis of the business and is required by the regulations governing income-tax reporting. As has been pointed out, the lawand the regulations governing the Federal income tax emphasize that the taxpayer's regular method of accounting is satisfactory so long as it clearly reflects the income. In addition to these general rules there are at certain points alternative procedures specifically provided for farmers by law or by regulation. The points at which the farmer is permitted to make choices include (1) figuring income on the cash or the accrual basis, (2) method of valuing items in the inventory, (3) method of figuring depreciation, (4) method of handling draft, breeding, and dairy animals, (5) treat ment of Commodity Credit loans, (6) treatment of income from farm woodlands. In addition, farmers may use as their tax year any 12 month period such as a crop or rental year, instead of the calendar year, if they regularly keep their books that way. Excerpt from Farm Bookkeeping and Accounts: Suitable as a Text-Book for the Student and as a Guide for the Farmer It has been suggested to the Authors the desirability of preparing and incorporating into the Text-book a series of questions at the end of each Chapter, so that the book might be of use for teaching purposes in Public Institutions and Schools, and this has been cheerfully done. A study of these will be found most helpful to those who may be engaged in equipping the younger generation to bear their portion of future responsibilities on the Farm, and will be undoubtedly the best method of inculcating tn an easy and gradual manner a thorough knowledge of the methods of accounting necessary as an adjunct to successful scientific farming. Excerpt from Tax Loss Farming Special treatment for farmers under the provisions of the Internal Revenue Code arises primarily from three sources: (1) A 1915 administrativedecision permitting farmers a choice of accounting methods to use in reporting income for tax purposes; (2) a 1919 Treasury regulation allowing farmers to write off capital expenditures incurred in developing orchards and ranches at the time they occur; (3) legislative action in 1951 confirming that livestock held for draft, breeding, or dairy purposes could be treated as property held for use in a trade or business and thus produce long - term capital gains upon sale. A provision covering livestock held for sporting purposes was added in 1969. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Bookkeeping for Farmers: A Treatise on Farm Accounts In recent years there has been much written on the importance of farmers keeping account of all their operations. Emerson and Flint in their excellent little work, The Manual of Agriculture, say The keeping of accurate accounts is indispensable to complete success in farming; without them the farmer can never see just where he stands, or whether he is making or losing money by this or that course of culture. It is well to keep a separate debit and credit account for each lot, charging it with all that is expended upon it from time to time in labor, manure and seed, and crediting it with the crops produced. At the end of the year the balance will show at a glance the gain or loss for the season. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
