Op 12 november 1928 werden Jan Lodewijk Pierson jr. (1893-1979) en Lucie Pierson-Franssen (1878-1959) ontvangen door Benito Mussolini, sinds zes jaar de dictator van het fascistische Italië. Het was het begin van een vriendschappelijke relatie die tot 1940 zou duren; tijdens hun jaarlijkse verblijf in Rome mochten de Piersons telkens bij de Duce langs komen. Vanaf 1929 probeerde het echtpaar een krachtige fascistische beweging van de grond te tillen. Daarin waren zij niet succesvol, onder andere doordat de verschillende fascistische groepen niet tot eenheid bereid waren. Ook probeerden Jan Lodewijk en Lucie Pierson Hendrikus Colijn, sinds 1933 opnieuw minister-president, te overtuigen van de zegeningen van het fascisme. Dit lukte evenmin, al bleef de staatsman wel de gehele jaren dertig met hen in geanimeerde correspondentie staan. Vanaf midden 1934 was duidelijk dat er in Nederland slechts één fascistische groepering was die enige kans op succes maakte, namelijk de door Anton Mussert geleide NSB. Zonder lid te worden kwamen de Piersons zeer dicht bij de NSB te staan. Na het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in september 1939 kozen zij openlijk de kant van nazi-Duitsland. dit leidde tot hun arrestatie op 10 mei 1940, maar in 1947 werden zij buiten vervolging gesteld. Welke rol hebben zij gespeeld, welke dromen hebben zij nagejaagd? Herman Langeveld laat zien hoe zij in hun tumultueuze leven aan de verkeerde kant van de geschiedenis hebben gestaan.
