Esuli in patria, costretti a palcoscenici marginali, a spazi culturali periferici: così i fascisti descrivono la propria condizione all'indomani del 1945. Eppure, sin dall'immediato dopoguerra, le edicole di tutta Italia si riempirono di rotocalchi i cui articoli raccontavano con toni agiografici, o quanto meno indulgenti, le imprese di Mussolini e dei suoi fedelissimi. Gli scaffali delle librerie ospitavano memoriali, biografie e persino romanzi firmati da fascisti e filofascisti. Andava così in scena, agli albori del processo di costruzione di una memoria pubblica attorno al Ventennio e alla stagione della guerra civile, la riscrittura di quello stesso passato da parte fascista. Una simile operazione di per sé non sorprende: la voglia di raccontare la propria versione dei fatti piegando il racconto in base ai propri interessi è un fatto fisiologico. Semmai a sorprendere è il buon esito di quell'operazione ed è in particolare questo punto che il libro indaga, dando conto del grado di complicità mostrato da ampi settori del mondo giornalistico ed editoriale. Non è così ovvio, infatti, che i protagonisti di un regime autoritario e liberticida e di un governo, quello della Rsi, complice di una forza occupante, disponessero della possibilità di far circolare legalmente la propria versione dei fatti.

Während einige Aufsätze sich auf theoretische, methodologische Probleme konzentrieren, beschäftigen sich die meisten Beiträge mit jeweils einem Land oder einer Region, wo eine faschistische Bewegung oder ein solches Regime zwischen den Kriegen und während des Zweiten Weltkriegs erfolgreich war, und wo es gleichzeitig eine signifikante katholische Präsenz in der Gesellschaft gab. Fast ganz Europa wird behandelt – ein beispielloses Unternehmen - , und eine große Zahl wichtiger Kontexte und Methoden wird untersucht. So wirken die Beiträge mit an der allgemeinen Entwicklung eines interpretativen ‚Cluster‘-Modells, das eine Reihe von Grundmustern der Forschung vereinigt und zukünftige Untersuchungen anregen wird. The papers presented in this volume analyse the many ways in which the Vatican, national Churches and individual catholics dealt with the rise of the extreme right in Europe throughout the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, from the end of the First World War, arguably one of the main catalysts of European interwar fascism, to the conclusion and immediate aftermath of the Second World War. While a number of papers focus primarily on theoretical, methodological issues pertaining to the book’s general theme, the majority of papers focus on either a country or region where a fascist movement or regime flourished between the wars and during the Second World War, and where there was a significant catholic presence in society. The various chapters cover almost the entire European continent – an endeavour that is unprecedented –, and they explore a wide range of relevant contexts and methodologies, thus further contributing to the general development of an interpretive ‘cluster’ model that incorporates a series of investigative matrixes, and that will hopefully inspire future research.

Since the 1920s, an endless flow of studies has analyzed the political systems of fascism, theseizure of power, the nature of the regimes, the atrocities committed, and, finally, the wars waged against other countries. Enriched with an introduction by David Forgacs, this book explores the complex relationship between photography and power in its various manifestations in Italian history throughout the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries. How did the Italian state employ the medium of photography as an instrument of dominance? In which ways has photography been used as a critical medium to resist hegemonic discourses? Taking into account published and unpublished images from professional photographers such as Letizia Battaglia, Tano D’Amico and Mario Cresci and non-professional photographers, artists, photo-reporters, and war soldiers, as well as social scientists and criminologists, such as Cesare Lombroso, this book unfolds the operations of power that lay behind the apparent objectivity of the photographic frame. Some essays in this volume discuss the use of photography in national and colonial discourses, as well as its employment in constructing images of power from war propaganda and fascism to public personas like Benito Mussolini and Silvio Berlusconi. Other contributions examine the ways in which the medium has been employed to create counter-hegemonic discourses, from the Resistance and the years of lead up to the contemporary times.
