In fact, acclaimed physicist and bestselling author Roger Penrose argues that researchers working at the extreme frontiers of physics are just as susceptible to these forces as anyone else. In this provocative book, he argues that fashion, faith, and fantasy, while sometimes productive and even essential in physics, may be leading today's researchers astray in three of the field's most important areas—string theory, quantum mechanics, and cosmology. Arguing that string theory has veered away from physical reality by positing six extra hidden dimensions, Penrose cautions that the fashionable nature of a theory can cloud our judgment of its plausibility. In the case of quantum mechanics, its stunning success in explaining the atomic universe has led to an uncritical faith that it must also apply to reasonably massive objects, and Penrose responds by suggesting possible changes in quantum theory. Turning to cosmology, he argues that most of the current fantastical ideas about the origins of the universe cannot be true, but that an even wilder reality may lie behind them. Finally, Penrose describes how fashion, faith, and fantasy have ironically also shaped his own work, from twistor theory, a possible alternative to string theory that is beginning to acquire a fashionable status, to "conformal cyclic cosmology," an idea so fantastic that it could be called "conformal crazy cosmology." Danish hymn-writing is something quite special. It is a strong, living tradition that Danes make use of in lifes moments of joy and sorrow. Community singing is a feature of both secular and religious life in Denmark, and it is perfectly normal to begin a meeting by singing a well-loved hymn, even if one is not a religious person. Expressions and images from hymns are also part of the everyday language -- Sorrow and joy hand in hand go together, for example, is a much-used expression that derives from a hymn by Kingo. The prime aim of this anthology has been to make a representative selection of four fashioners of Danish faith. Although Danes are familiar with many of their hymns, the unabbreviated versions of many of them may come as a surprise, as may the wide range of what they actually wrote. The English translations will grant non-Danish speakers around the world access to a vital aspect of the Danish religious and cultural heritage -- and maybe even encourage them to take a peek at the originals as well. John Irons was born into a Methodist family with a strong hymn-singing tradition. After completing his education, he left England fifty years ago, since when he has mostly lived in Denmark. He has been a professional translator for over thirty years, one of his specialist areas being the translation of poetry. Jørn Henrik Petersen is a professor whose special areas are economics, social sciences and history. He is a leading expert on the history of the Danish welfare state and the importance of hymns in this context. Anne-Marie Mai is a professor of Nordic literature whose special areas include the history of Danish literature and the Danish hymn-writers. Jørn Henrik Petersen and Anne-Marie Mai have written an introduction to the anthology that traces the history of Danish hymn-writing. The poet Klaus Høeck has acted as consultant both for the editors and the translator.

More than this, consumption practices have changed and new Islamic and Islamist identities have emerged. This book investigates three of the most widespread faith-inspired communities in Turkey: the Gulen, Suleymanli and the Menzil. Nazli Alimen compares these communities, looking at their diverse interpretations of Islamic rules related to the body and dress, and how these different groups compete for power and control in Turkey. In tracing what motivates consumption practices, the book adds to the growing interest in the commercial aspects of modest and Islamic fashion. It also highlights the importance of clothing and bodily rituals (such as veiling, grooming and food choices) for the formation of community identities. Based on ethnographic research, Alimen analyses the relationship between the marketplace and religion, and shows how different communities interact with each other and state institutions. This is a detailed examination of the theological innovations of Kevin Vanhoozer and John Franke. Each proposes that doctrinal and systematic theology should be re-cast in the light of postmodernity. No longer can Christian theology be foundational,or have a stable metaphysical and epistemological framework. Vanhoozer advocates a theo-dramatic reconstruction of Christian doctrine, replacing the timeless propositions of the purely cerebral theology of the Reformed tradition in favor of a theology that does justice to the polyphony of multiple biblical genres. Franke holds that theology is part of a three-way conversation between Scripture, tradition, and culture, with an uncertain outcome. This study shows that each of these proposals is based on misunderstanding and exaggeration, and that the case against foundationalism is unclear and unpersuasive. It is argued that Vanhoozer's appeal to revelation as divine speech-acts is not as radical as he thinks, and his epistemology is weak. In the hands of postmodernity, Christian theology abandons its exactness and the standards of care that are a notable feature of doctrinal constrictions. The book will be of importance to those with interest in Reformed theology or Christian theology more generally. It provides a clear assessment of the impact of the postmodern mindset on theology.
