What is play? Why do we play? What can play teach us about our life as social beings? In this critical investigation into the significance of play, Henning Eichberg argues that through play we can ask questions about the world, others and ourselves. Playing a game and asking a question are two forms of human practice that are fundamentally connected. Readers who appear to be lost in a storyworld, members of theatre or cinema audiences who are moved to tears while watching a performance, beholders of paintings who are absorbed by the representations in front of them, players of computer games entranced by the fictional worlds in which they interactively participate – all of these mental states of imaginative immersion are variants of ‘aesthetic illusion’, as long as the recipients, although thus immersed, are still residually aware that they are experiencing not real life but life-like representations created by artefacts. Aesthetic illusion is one of the most forceful effects of reception processes in representational media and thus constitutes a powerful allurement to expose ourselves, again and again to, e.g., printed stories, pictures and films, be they factual or fictional. In contrast to traditional discussions of this phenomenon, which tend to focus on one medium or genre from one discipline only, the present volume explores aesthetic illusion, as well as its reverse side, the breaking of illusion, from a highly innovative multidisciplinary and transmedial perspective. The essays assembled stem from disciplines that range from literary theory to art history and include contributions on drama, lyric poetry, the visual arts, photography, architecture, instrumental music and computer games, as well as reflections on the cognitive foundations of aesthetic illusion from an evolutionary perspective. The contributions to individual media and aspects of aesthetic illusion are prefaced by a detailed theoretical introduction. Owing to its transmedial and multidisciplinary scope, the volume will be relevant to students and scholars from a wide variety of fields: cultural history at large, intermediality and media studies, as well as, more particularly, literary studies, music, film, and art history.

If the practice of war is as old as human history, so too is the need to reflect upon war, to understand its meaning and implications. The Pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus asserted in 600BC that War (polemos) is justice, thus inaugurating a long philosophical tradition of consideration of the morality of war. In recent times, the increased specialisation of academic disciplines has led a to a fragmentation of the thematic of war within the academy - the topic of war is as likely to be addressed by sociologists, cultural theorists, psychologists and even computer scientists as it is by historians, philosophers or political scientists. This diversity of disciplinary approaches to war is undoubtedly fruitful in itself but can lead to an isolation of respective disciplinary analyses of war from each other. In July 2002, at Mansfield College, Oxford, an inter-disciplinary conference on war (entitled 'War and Virtual War') was held so as to redress some of this disciplinary isolationism and to forge an integrative dialogue on war, in all its facets. The papers in this volume were nominated by delegates as the most paradigmatic of the ethos of the original project and the most successful in achieving its aims of inter-disciplinarity and critical dialogue.

Literatur oder, allgemeiner, Texte sind nicht erst seit dem 20. Jahrhundert inter- und transmedial ausgerichtet. Dennoch ist es sinnvoll, von einer medial reflexiven Literatur erst seit dem audiovisuellen Jahrhundert zu sprechen, dem des Films. Medientransformationen sind seitdem nicht allein paradigmatische Wechsel der Systeme, sondern auch Vervielfältigungen durch die Pluralität der medialen Träger. Neben allgemeineren Fragestellungen und theoretischen Bestimmungen steht das Wechselverhältnis von Text, Bild und Musik im Zentrum detaillierter Untersuchungen. Der intermedialen Performanz ist ein weiterer Teil des Bandes gewidmet, der schließlich die Brücke zu Film und Fernsehen schlägt. Das Buch geht zurück auf eine bilaterale Tagung in Ithaca, NY, an der Cornell University. Partner und Mitveranstalter war die Universität Bremen. Hinzu kamen in Fragen der Inter- und Transmedialität einschlägig ausgewiesene Wissenschaftler aus den USA und aus Deutschland. Enthalten sind vierzehn Beiträge in deutscher und sechs in englischer Sprache. Vereint werden ganz unterschiedliche Positionen der amerikanischen und europäischen Intermedialitätsforschung. Gerade diese Heterogenität ist eine Stärke der vorliegenden Publikation. Zusätzlich liefern die Herausgeber eine neuartige Kategorisierung und Begrifflichkeit und bedienen so ein weiter steigendes Interesse in den Literatur-, Medien- und Kulturwissenschaften.
