This book is about saving the lives of hundreds of “at risk” teens and my struggle as a young boy after migrating to Washington, DC from rural Mississippi in the early fifties. After my mother enrolled me in a public school, the guidance counselor evaluated my record and demoted me one grade. My teachers told me that I was not college material. We were a proud family and this treatment upon arrival only served to ignite a fi re in my mother and me. Not only did I excel, I applied, and was accepted to the prestigious Dunbar High School in Washington. I was sent to Detroit, Michigan by the Johnson Administration with a group of experts to examine the reasons behind the rioting, burning and destruction in 1967. It was there that I received my Masters Degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. It was here that I saw poverty, children who were underserved and uneducated. I saw mothers who were reaching out for assistance and desperately needed a helping hand, and I saw myself and my family in their eyes. HERE was my destiny - God had His hand on my life. Through faith, and working hard, I had overcome some difficult odds. I started on a never-ending path of teaching, mentoring, and child advocacy. I became a counselor for “at-risk” children. I earned my Doctorate from Virginia Tech and State University, I became a guidance counselor, a school principal, an acting Deputy Superintendent and more. I was an adjunct professor. As you continue to read, you will see why and how I feel I was predestined to serve and save the lives of young people. I want to inspire more people to reach out to “at risk” teens. They need more resources and not less.

What if a man who never had a father in his life could be a wise and healthy father to his children? Men and women who grew up in a vicious cycle of broken family dynamics may despair that they can become the father or mother their children need. Jay Cameron is a twenty-first-century Renaissance man--a successful entrepreneur, public speaker, marketing consultant, producer, broadcaster, and author. Yet he grew up with an absentee father and an overworked mother. Burdened by questions of how he could be a good father himself, he began to seek a better life. In this book, Jay uses lessons from his own story to share how to: - Discover your true identity and pass it on to your children - Take the good and leave the bad from your own childhood - Learn and apply wisdom to your life choices and your parenting style - Value your children as the blessing they are and give them what they need most - Break generational cycles to leave a legacy of strength and hope At the end of each chapter are application-focused questions and practical action steps to help you develop successful parenting skills. It's not enough just to want better or try harder for your kids, who need more than your monetary support or enrollment in a good school. Begin reading Fatherless Fathering today to discover how to make wise, grounded choices that will impact your family for generations to come

The story of fatherlessness is being written into the heart of this generation. It can be heard in our songs, seen in our movies, read in our blogs. It is a story of grief, pain and loss. A story of shame, loneliness and rejection. A story of missed potential and wasted opportunity. A story that desperately needs to be heard. But fatherlessness is more than a personal tragedy. It is a growing epidemic affecting more than the single life of an individual. Fatherless youth are the driving force behind our society’s biggest problems such as: gangs, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse and suicide. And all too often, the fatherless are either marginalized or ignored. How should we respond? How do we meaningfully engage the growing story of fatherlessness? How can the faith community enter into and begin rewriting this tragic story? It is in relationship that this generation has been wounded the most deeply; therefore, it is in relationship where the healing must begin. Intentional, intergenerational mentoring is the secret and foundational ingredient behind this new story of hope. Mentoring is also the most strategic way to reconcile the fatherless generation with God. As we make ourselves sacrificially available to this generation, we will begin to see a new wave of transformation—hope born in the story of changed destinies and lives.

One man shares his story of growing up fatherless, the lessons it taught him, and how sons and parents can combat its side effects. Searching for Dad steps inside the mind, heart, and soul of a boy without a father. Recognizing the power of the emotional and psychological side effects of growing up fatherless will help absentee fathers, single mothers, and sons who survived a fatherless childhood understand and cope. Byron Ricks shares his story about the challenges he faced, the lessons he learned, and the man he became. He writes for fathers who do not realize the full impact their absence can have, for mothers wanting to do the best for their sons but are not sure what that is, and for men who feel empty and unattached and are not sure why. Ultimately, Searching for Dad is a book of hope, filled with illustrations about nine side effects and how fathers, mothers, and sons can forestall, minimize and even reverse them. Growing up fatherless may be the condition; healing is the possibility.
