This thesis focuses on grid-connected PV systems and their impact on protection scheme performance during system fault conditions. The main objective of this work is to design a simulation model that can simulate the response of the system during different fault applications. The ATP program is used to model the grid-connected PV system along with the VSC control schemes based on the decoupled double synchronous reference frame method. The ATP model can be used as a teaching tool in courses and for research purposes. Different types of faults are applied to the power distribution system, with a distance protection element (21) proposed to protect the distribution system. An inverse-time overcurrent element (51) is used to protect the collector system on the ac-side of the VSC. Due to the characteristics of the VSC, it is controlled to limit the fault current contribution to less than 1.2 pu of the maximum current value. This causes the protection elements to either not trip or not trip correctly. In addition, due to the limited fault current and the weak source of the grid-connected PV system compared to the grid system source, the mho distance element mislocates the fault location. It calculates that the apparent fault location is much closer to the PCC than it actually is. This study indicates that the performance of the supervised distance element and the inverse-time overcurrent element are impacted by the grid-connected PV system. Therefore, in the fault analysis study and the protection schemes settings, this type of system should not be modeled as a conventional power generator.

In this Final Thesis work, the development of a new monitoring and automatic fault detection system for grid-connected photovoltaic systems is presented and described in its details. This product has been developed in JavaScript and HTLM protocols and it allow real time an online performance monitoring and comparison together with fault detection and causes diagnosis. The presented solution is focus on the DC side of the PV system and it includes: a simple and effective simulation model (based on the calculation normalized energy yield from the environmental irradiance and the module temperature evolution), a real time monitoring and supervision tool (based on the comparison between simulated and actual power production) and an innovative fault detection system (based on the analysis of the miscellaneous capture losses, the fault signal frequency and two indicators). The two indicators used to distinguish among the most common faults are: the ratio between maximum power point current and the short circuit one, and the ratio between maximum power point voltage and the open circuit one. An intuitive and user friendly visual interface has also been created as an on-line web page to allow the power plant operator an easy and prompt supervision of the behavior of multiple PV plants. The developed solution has been successfully test on an actual grid-connected PV system in real and faulty operation conditions.

This book discusses the operation of power systems amid the 4th industrial revolution and the value of Industry 4.0 technologies to grid operators and end customers. The concept of smart grids was introduced years ago, but their practical implementation into power grids was delayed as the information communication technology infrastructure was not ready. The transition to smart grids can be put into three dimensions: decentralization, decarbonization, and digitalization. Industry 4.0 technologies can enable more advanced features that can add value to all parties in smart grids and achieve a more holistic efficiency increase for the entire system via accomplishing business goals and realizing technical requirements. Technical topics discussed in the book include: Structure of the generalized IoT value chain and IoT applications for low carbon technologies. Topological improvement of electrical equipment to facilitate a smooth transition to the smart grid infrastructure. Improvement of techniques to tackle advanced power system problems such as energy management, power equipment diagnostics, and renewable energy integration. Modeling, simulation, and analytic tools for cyber-attacks and cyber security actions for current cyber-physical power systems. Artificial intelligence, big data, and machine learning application to power system problems. Intelligent controllers for an advanced residential system.
