Los incendios forestales no tienen buena fama, pues solemos relacionarlos con desastres naturales que conllevan destrucción y, en ocasiones, víctimas humanas. Sin embargo, hay otra visión menos negativa si tenemos en cuenta que los incendios forman parte de la naturaleza y han moldeado la diversidad de nuestros ecosistemas durante millones de años. Aun así, aunque existen regímenes de incendios que son naturales y totalmente sostenibles desde el punto de vista ecológico, la gran cantidad de viviendas construidas en nuestros montes, junto con el cambio global, hace que algunos de ellos sean insostenibles desde el punto de vista socioeconómico, lo que genera muchos conflictos en la gestión del territorio. En los últimos años, el conocimiento de la ecología de los incendios forestales ha mejorado y los cambios ambientales que ya eran evidentes entonces se han incrementado y se han hecho más patentes. El aumento de incendios intensos y de grandes dimensiones está ocurriendo en casi todo el planeta, y es más evidente que nunca que el problema de los incendios no se soluciona con más medios y más tecnologías. Las claves de la gestión que se utilizaban con el clima del siglo XX no tienen por qué servir en el del siglo XXI. Se requiere un cambio de paradigma basado en la ciencia básica. Lo que arde son plantas con una larga historia evolutiva que se debe entender si se quiere hacer una gestión sostenible. En este marco, era obligatorio hacer una nueva versión actualizada y ampliada del libro, doce años después, con más énfasis en los cambios recientes y con ideas para la gestión.
