In a new approach to Goethe's Faust I, Evanghelia Stead extensively discusses Moritz Retzsch's twenty-six outline prints (1816) and how their spin-offs made the unfathomable play available to larger reader communities through copying and extensive distribution circuits, including bespoke gifts. The images amply transformed as they travelled throughout Europe and overseas, revealing differences between countries and cultures but also their pliability and resilience whenever remediated. This interdisciplinary investigation evidences the importance of print culture throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in nations involved in competition and conflict. Retzsch's foundational set crucially engenders parody, and inspires the stage, literature, and three-dimensional objects, well beyond common perceptions of print culture's influence. This book is available in open access thanks to an Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) grant.

Schätzungsweise 60 000 tödlich endende Hexenprozesse in Europa haben nicht nur in Prozessakten Spuren hinterlassen. Im Bewusstsein der Zeitgenossen – und in der Literatur – blieben sie noch lange nach den großen Verfolgungswellen präsent. Wenn man sich das markante Geschehen heute ins Gedächtnis ruft, sind neue Einblicke in die Literaturgeschichte und in Konstanten des Empfindens von Bedrohung möglich. Dies zeigt das Beispiel Goethes Faust: Das Drama enthält nicht nur die bekannten Hexenimaginationen, sondern auch viel mehr historische Wirklichkeit als bisher wahrgenommen worden ist. Und weil es eines der besterforschten Werke ist, kann man es als Präzedenzfall für verschwiegene Spuren in der Literatur(wissenschaft) betrachten. In der Studie wird Goethes Wissen um die Hexenverfolgung ermittelt und dessen Manifestation im Faust rekonstruiert. Einerseits führt dies zu einer an vielen Stellen neuen Interpretation des Werkes. Andererseits stößt man auf beredte Leerstellen in der Literaturwissenschaft, die Sozialgeschichte rezipiert und schreibt.

Das Buch stellt den Anspruch, Phänomene, die man als "Klassiker" bezeichnet, besser zu verstehen und zugleich tradierte Vorstellungen darüber, was als klassisch gilt oder zu gelten hat, zu korrigieren. Dazu wird "Klassik" nicht, wie in den historischen und ideologiekritischen Debatten üblich, als Epochenbegriff verstanden, sondern als eine kulturelle Praxis, die in medialen und lebensweltlichen Adaptionen realisiert wird. Gefragt wird, kurz gesagt, wie und warum einige Autor*innen oder Werke über längere historische Perioden hinweg präsent bleiben und ein Kulturgut – in dem Fall exemplarisch die Ballade – so ausdrücklich prägen, dass sie als "Klassiker" wahrgenommen werden. Die Antwort geht von der These aus, dass dies – im Unterschied zu immer noch verbreiteten essentialistischen Erklärungsansätzen – nicht von der Qualität des Autors oder der Autorin bzw. ihrer Werke abhängt, sondern von soziokulturellen Bedarfskonstellationen. Im Ergebnis der Arbeit steht ein Zugriff, der "Klassik" nicht wiederholt als ein umstrittenes Konzept problematisiert, sondern als kulturwissenschaftliches Phänomen komplementär zum Kanon heuristisch profiliert und darüber hinaus ein Begriffsangebot zu dessen Analyse macht.

This volume explores a basic question in the historiography of art: the extent to which iconology was a homogenous research method in its own immutable right. By contributing to the rejection of the universalizing narrative, these case studies argue that there were many strands of iconology. Methods that differed from the ‘canonised’ approach of Panofsky were proposed by Godefridus Johannes Hoogewerff and Hans Sedlmayr. Researchers affiliated with the Warburg Institute in London also chose to distance themselves from Panofsky’s work. Poland, in turn, was the breeding ground for yet another distinct variety of iconology. In Communist Czechoslovakia there were attempts to develop a ‘Marxist iconology’. This book, written by recognized experts in the field, examines these and other major strands of iconology, telling the tale of iconology’s reception in the countries formerly behind the Iron Curtain. Attitudes there ranged from enthusiastic acceptance in Poland, to critical reception in the Soviet Union, to reinterpretation in Czechoslovakia and the German Democratic Republic, and, finally, to outright rejection in Romania. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual studies, and historiography.
