The Prelude at the Theatre is given in the original edition; but, as the Prelude is not a part of the Tragedy, and is only a statement of the principles on which the Tragedy is constructed, it has been omitted to make room for the Scene in the Second Part which describes the Death of Faust, and virtually completes the story. The views enunciated as to the Time of Action, the Sequence of the Scenes, the character of the Dramatis Personœ, and the general Moral of the Tragedy, may be singular, but they have one recommendation - they remove all the objections that have been advanced against Goethe by his critics.
