Maine offers some of the most diverse angling opportunities in the nation. Depending on the season, or your fishing preference, you can canoe a remote pond in search of native brook trout, cast dries in solitude for rising trout on a large freestone river, troll in a lake for salmon, or search for stripers along some of the most beautiful and rugged coastline in America. Because of this diverse fishing, it is no surprise that Maine also has a rich fly tying tradition. In this book, Maine guide, fly designer, and former fly shop owner Bob Mallard shares with readers 50 essential flies from guides and other experts around the region. Detailed recipes and photos are included for each fly as well as fishing tips and other information, making this book an invaluable resource for anyone planning to visit this state as well as residents that want to learn how to catch more fish in their local waters.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1892 edition. Excerpt: ... flies which are my especial favorites, the Hamlin and the Montreal My good luck with these particular flies very naturally gives them favor over others, in my mind. Supplementing my experience with the Hamlin in these waters, I can add the testimony of William H. Fullerton, of Windsor, Vermont, with whom I have fished, and whose name gives a weight that will be recognized by all fishermen who have had the pleasure of meeting him. I have brought more fish to the net with the Hamlin than all others combined. At times the fish would prefer other flies, and as the light began to fade the White Miller would be taking, yet I have seen a five-pound trout captured by moonlight on a Hamlin. Last year I made a departure from my usual practice and visited the lake in the early part of June, and enjoyed good sport, particularly with the land-locked salmon; for these I used the Silver Doctor. The efficacy of the Silver Doctor with the fish was demonstrated by two other fishermen. Mr. C. P. Stevens, of Boston, caught one weighing 5 pounds, and Mr. Parish, of Montville, Conn., one of the same weight. This fly, I think, is generally considered the most killing for this fish. Maine. White Miller. Red Ibis. ( Stream fishing Cow Dung. for Trout . Montreal. C. W. Newhall, Worcester, Mass. There is such a pleasant and varied picture in following a stream through woodland and meadow that I prefer brook fishing to any other; and on my visits to Maine, with one exception, I have always followed the streams, and with good success. I find that I can catch more fish from five A. M. to ten A. M. than during the remainder of the day. I have used the White Miller, Red Ibis, Cow Dung, and the Montreal. The first named worked best in a dull day, when the sky was...

With humor and compassion, author J. H. Hall chronicles the joys and tribulations of Maine fly fishermen, their loved ones, and their adversaries. Hall's characters share a passion for fly-fishing-their lifeline-and an indifference to most of society's other conventions. Whether building an indoor trout stream, robbing a bank, or waging mischief against a market-savvy, modernist guide, these characters gallantly struggle to preserve a way of life and a part of Maine that is rapidly disappearing. Praise for previously published works by J. H. Hall: Paradise: Stories of a Changing Chesapeake: 'Hall's portrayal glows like a watercolor. He mobilizes his language in quick, sure strokes: subdued, taut, winsome by turns." -Ramon de Rosas, Maine In Print 'Michael Crichton is not the only doctor-turned-writer to come down the pike in the past few years. In fact, I would.say he's not even the best. The author I've just discovered [J. H. Hall] is considerably better." -Cheryl Nowak, Eastern Shore News Selling Fish: Stories from a Fishing Life: '.Jim Hall has always been dead serious about fishing. Those of you who feel the same way will love and understand this book" -John Cole, author of Striper and In Maine

“Who of all that go a-fishing will deny the feeling of a calm content and the glow of satisfaction consequent upon a creel a little heavier of a fish a little larger than that of his fellow-fisherman?” Over 120 years after its original publication, Mary Orvis Marbury’s Favorite Flies and Their Histories remains a hugely popular and reliable resource for fly-fishing enthusiasts. Marbury’s compilation of nineteenth-century patterns, fancy flies, and fishing theories led the way in standardizing fly patterns in North America, and remarkably, these century-old techniques continue to be cherished by pursuers of the modern sport. With information gathered from more than 200 fly-fishers and seasoned anglers across the United States and Canada, Favorite Flies and Their Histories details the stories, histories, and appearances of the most beloved and most successful flies in the sport. Marbury shares stories of over 300 lake, salmon, trout, and bass flies, divided by their geographic location and accompanied by a list of her fly-fishing correspondents. Her patterns are ornate, often beautiful, and always highly effective. Containing a wealth of photographs, engravings, and elaborate color plates, Favorite Flies and Their Histories is a must-have addition to any serious fly-fisher’s collection.
