This paper presents a series of results concerning the labour-market impact of inward foreign direct investment (FDI) in the UK. The paper demonstrates that one of the crucial impacts of FDI is to increase wage inequality and the use of relatively more skilled labour in the domestic firms. This result is found to be a combination of two effects. First, the entry by a multinational enterprise (MNE) increases the demand for skilled workers in an industry or region, thus increasing wage inequality. Second, technology spillovers occur from foreign to domestic firms. As a result of these spillovers, relative demand for skilled workers increases in the domestic firms, further contributing to aggregate wage inequality and skill upgrading. The paper also considers how FDI impacts upon skill shares by productivity differentials between foreign and domestic firms. Finally, the policy implications of this are discussed, from the perspective of regional development, and the likely effectiveness of attracting FDI to reduce structural unemployment.

Globalization and the growing integration of national markets have had profound effects on the operation of markets, not least labour markets. In this book, a range of leading commentators on globalization and labour markets present original contribution on the interaction between these two areas. This book assesses the impact of globalization on trade, cross-border investment and migration from both a theoretical and econometric standpoint and discusses the possible applications of this analysis for both industrialized and developing countries.

What makes developing countries attractive for foreign direct investment (FDI)? Labour regulations are believed to be one of the major factors determining the level of FDI inflows to the developing countries. In order to allure the foreign investors, countries try to weaken labour rights, so that investors can reduce their labour costs. In this paper, we study the relationship between labour regulations and the amount of FDI inflows to the developing countries. Based on analysis of data from fifteen emerging markets, it is posited that changes in selective labour regulations influences inflows of FDI. It is concluded that policymakers in these developing countries need to strike a balance between securing the interest of the workers on the one hand and making efforts to attract a higher amount of FDI on the other.

This book expresses the reasons to embark on a production management system and begin a journey to a better social and economic life in Puerto Rico. Among the population of Puerto Rico there is a simultaneous presence of a high rate of unemployment and a well-educated workforce. How has this happened? How could the country overcome this economic situation and return to a path of sustainable economic growth in the short and long term? The study here presented introduces an objective and scientific input on these economic issues that are impacting the Puerto Rican society. Achieve greater economic and social welfare in a geographic area is based on increasing individual productivity that workers and employees can unfold in different workplaces, business and industries. The Impact Of Foreign Direct Investment Inflows On Regional Labour Markets In Hungary written by Károly Fazekas and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with categories.

The objective of this paper is to examine the nature and determinants of the regional distribution of foreign investment enterprise (FIE) employment in Hungary. Factors explaining the spatial concentration of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows are investigated and the impact of regional FDI inflows on the performance of regional labour markets is measured. The main conclusion is that the regional distribution of FDI inflows is strongly influenced by the educational level of the local population, the externalities of urban agglomerations and the geographical location of regions. Additional advantages are identified in the case of those regions adjoining the Western-Slovakian, Austrian and Slovenian borders. A self-reinforcing process can be observed here: FDI is attracted to regions where unemployment is lower due to better educational levels and geographical advantages, while an increase in FDI in turn creates new job opportunities. We believe, however, that education and geographical location are in large part merely symptomatic of other, underlying factors. Uncovering these underlying factors has obvious policy implications: location as such cannot be changed, for example, but these background variables could be modified by changes in regional policy.
