In 1921, FDR had just lost an election as VP candidate with Governor Cox against Harding, he was overcome by an illness that left him paralyzed from the waist down, and his marriage was on the rocks. He retired to his home in Hyde Park with his wife Eleanor and an ever-present advisor, Louis Howe. With her signature insight, Julie Fenster presents a vivid, behind-the-scenes portrait of the world of the Roosevelts in a critical time, taking readers inside this peculiar arrangement and revealing how this intimate friendship lead to the resurgence of FDR. Eleanor Roosevelt, too, would never be the same again. Their son Elliott said, "The person who was most responsible for the development of my mother's personality was Louis Howe, as he was of my father. He was a man that gave my father the iron will and the ability to move ahead politically, which I don't think he would have ever done on his own. Louis Howe was probably the greatest influence on both my father and my mother's lives."

A ghost has inhabited the Oval Office since 1945 -- the ghost of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. FDR's formidable presence has cast a large shadow on the occupants of that office in the years since his death, and an appreciation of his continuing influence remains essential to understanding the contemporary presidency. This new edition of In the Shadow of FDR has been updated to examine Bill Clinton's presidency, including possible parallels between Hillary Clinton and Eleanor Roosevelt. Concluding with an analysis of the 2000 presidential campaign, William E. Leuchtenburg assesses the influence FDR's legacy is likely to continue to have in the new century.

Kermit Roosevelt was family to two of the twentieth century's most revered Presidents - he was the son of Theodore Roosevelt and cousin to Franklin Roosevelt. He influenced each in a major way - as protector to one and a major risk to the other. He would accompany his father on two dangerous and demanding expeditions to remote regions of the world and later become a major threat to Franklin's administration - his story with its mysterious ending has never been published. He was a brilliant and complex combination of conflicting character traits and inner turmoil. Immersing himself in literature, languages and natural history he became compelled to engage in adventure and war with an unbridled obsession. He managed major shipping companies, discovered new and rare animal species while traveling the world and even organized an amateur spy organization for his cousin FDR as the Fascists rose to power in the 1930s. But for all of Kermit's many gifts, there was a darker side to Kermit Roosevelt. Later, at the behest of FDR, the FBI would watch him for more than a month as he disappeared while he lived in a hotel and carried on an affair with a shady woman. Alcoholism began to rule his life. His mounting indiscretions became a serious problem for the War Department and the Roosevelt Administration. And then there is the manner of his death in 1943 which the New York Times reported the cause and location unknown, although presumably it was natural. For two decades, the circumstances of his death were concealed by the government. Even into the 1970s there were efforts to suppress any information. Was it suicide, which eventually was released as the official cause of death? Or was there a more sinister reason for his demise? A thorough review of the classified government documents reveal numerous inconsistencies, oversights and implausibility's. Much conflict exists in the testimony taken from military personnel with no follow-up or corroborating testimony. His supposed manner of death is highly improbable. Even the official time of death conflicts between the autopsy report and the Army's investigation. The Army rushed to expedite and close the case with no forensics, no ballistics investigation and no follow-up questioning of witnesses. Although a President's son, and a well-known figure in his own right, the coroner's report stated: "parents unknown." Almost thirty-years later when a general officer requested information on "how he died," the government replied "Died as a result of self inflicted gunshot wound...this information is not to be released." Who was this multi-dimensional, brilliant man? Perhaps as Kermit himself wrote: ..".it is when men are off in the wilds that they show themselves as they really are." Surely Kermit Roosevelt has been lost in the shadow of his family's fame. The last chapter covering details of the Iranian involvement of Kermit's son Kim presents a Roosevelt influence on the United States and the world long after the eras of Theodore and Franklin - an influence concealed for many years and little known even today by most Americans.

Fdr And His Enemies written by Albert Fried and has been published by Macmillan + ORM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-15 with History categories.

Not since the Civil War was America so riven by conflict as it was during Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency. His bold initiatives and his willingness to break historic precedent in handling the Great Depression and the coming of World War II were challenged by giant figures of the era, powerful public men each with their own fierce constituencies. Albert Fried brings out the tremendous drama in Roosevelt's ideological and personal struggle with five influential men: ex-New York governor and presidential candidate Al Smith, the enormously popular "radio priest" Charles E. Coughlin, Louisiana Senator Huey Long, labor champion John L. Lewis, and the universally adored aviator Charles A. Lindbergh. An enthralling story of a critical period in twentieth century history, FDR and His Enemies reveals the intellectual, moral, and tactical underpinnings of a great debate in which Roosevelt always triumphed.

America First written by H. W. Brands and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-24 with History categories.

Bestselling historian and Pulitzer Prize finalist H. W. Brands narrates the fierce debate over America's role in the world in the runup to World War II through its two most important figures: President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who advocated intervention, and his isolationist nemesis, aviator and popular hero Charles Lindbergh. Hitler's invasion of Poland in September 1939 launched a momentous period of decision-making for the United States. With fascism rampant abroad, should America take responsibility for its defeat? For popular hero Charles Lindbergh, saying no to another world war only twenty years after the first was the obvious answer. Lindbergh had become famous and adored around the world after his historic first flight over the Atlantic in 1927. In the years since, he had emerged as a vocal critic of American involvement overseas, rallying Americans against foreign war as the leading spokesman the America First Committee. While Hitler advanced across Europe and threatened the British Isles, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt struggled to turn the tide of public opinion. With great effort, political shrewdness and outright deception—aided by secret British disinformation efforts in America—FDR readied the country for war. He pushed the US onto the world stage where it has stayed ever since. In this gripping narrative, H.W. Brands sheds light on a crucial tipping point in American history and depicts the making of a legendary president.

Fdr S Folly written by Jim Powell and has been published by Crown this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-12-18 with History categories.

The Great Depression and the New Deal. For generations, the collective American consciousness has believed that the former ruined the country and the latter saved it. Endless praise has been heaped upon President Franklin Delano Roosevelt for masterfully reining in the Depression’s destructive effects and propping up the country on his New Deal platform. In fact, FDR has achieved mythical status in American history and is considered to be, along with Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln, one of the greatest presidents of all time. But would the Great Depression have been so catastrophic had the New Deal never been implemented? In FDR’s Folly, historian Jim Powell argues that it was in fact the New Deal itself, with its shortsighted programs, that deepened the Great Depression, swelled the federal government, and prevented the country from turning around quickly. You’ll discover in alarming detail how FDR’s federal programs hurt America more than helped it, with effects we still feel today, including: • How Social Security actually increased unemployment • How higher taxes undermined good businesses • How new labor laws threw people out of work • And much more This groundbreaking book pulls back the shroud of awe and the cloak of time enveloping FDR to prove convincingly how flawed his economic policies actually were, despite his good intentions and the astounding intellect of his circle of advisers. In today’s turbulent domestic and global environment, eerily similar to that of the 1930s, it’s more important than ever before to uncover and understand the truth of our history, lest we be doomed to repeat it.
