Charting the expansion of the Rum Seljuqs from rulers of a small principality to a fully- fledged sultanate ruling over almost the whole of Anatolia, this book demonstrates how ideology, rather than military success, was crucial in this development. The Rum Seljuqs examines four distinct phases of development, beginning with the rule of Sulaymān (473-478/1081-1086) and ending with the rule of Kay Khusraw II (634-644/ 1237-1246). Firstly, Songül Mecit examines the Great Seljuq ideology as a pre-cursor to the ideology of the Rum Seljuqs. Continuing to explore the foundation of the Seljuq principality in Nicaea, the book then examines the third phase and the period of decline for the Great Seljuqs. Finally, the book turns to the apogee of the Rum Seljuq state and questions whether these sultans can, at this stage, be considered truly Perso-Islamic rulers? Employing the few available Rum Seljuq primary sources in Arabic and Persian, and drawing on the evidence of coins and monumental inscriptions, this book will be of use to scholars and students of History and Middle East Studies.

This book uses approaches from existential anthropology to enquire into the question of how concepts and experiences relate. The focus is on the way the notions jihad, mujahid and terrorism were used during a military intervention in Tajikistan in 2010. The book includes long-term ethnographic material, popular pamphlets on Islam and an internet analysis of the conflict, offering new insights into how concepts and experiences relate. Since the end of the Soviet Union, the people from the republic Tajikistan have struggled to find a place in the larger Muslim world, a painful process unfolding in relation to global events, discourses and politics. The primary readership for the book will come from academia and policy makers. Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791–1864) was the most successful composer of grand operas in nineteenth-century Paris, whose music continued to be frequently performed worldwide into the following century. Today, recent scholars acknowledge his stature but his operas have become stage rarities. There is normally a gap on shelves in libraries and bookshops between Mendelssohn and Mozart (Messaien and Monteverdi for the better resourced). There is no biography or broad evaluation of Meyerbeer in print in English. Die neue radikale Rechte resultiert aus dem in den meisten westlichen Demokratien zu beobachtenden Modernisierungsschub sozialen und kulturellen Wandels seit den sechziger Jahren einerseits und in spezifischen Mobilisierungsphasen aus dem in den jeweiligen Ländern vorhandenen politischen und sozialen Kontext andererseits. Sie repräsentiert dabei den rechten Pol einer neuen, quer zu alten Konfliktlinien verlaufenden ideologischen und organisatorischen Polarisierung. Dies stellt eine grundlegend neue Situation dar, in der Rechtsradikalismus wieder anschlußfähig - und damit politikfähig - werden kann. In den USA dominiert eine bewegungsförmige Ausprägung der neuen radikalen Rechten mit christlich-fundamentalistischen und fremdenfeindlichen Tendenzen, in Frankreich die parteiförmige Organisation des Front national mit seinem Konzept einer ethnokulturellen französischen Nation. Das deutsche Szenario ist dagegen durch die Ideologie eines autoritären und völkischen Nationalismus mit einem schwachen Parteiensektor und hoher Militanz und Gewaltbereitschaft am rechten Rand gekennzeichnet.
