High-Risk Feminism in Colombia documents the experiences of grassroots women’s organizations that united to demand gender justice during and in the aftermath of Colombia’s armed conflict. In doing so, it illustrates a little-studied phenomenon: women whose experiences with violence catalyze them to mobilize and resist as feminists, even in the face of grave danger. Despite a well-established tradition of studying women in war, we tend to focus on their roles as mothers or carers, as peacemakers, or sometimes as revolutionaries. This book explains the gendered underpinnings of why women engage in feminist mobilization, even when this takes place in a ‘domain of losses’ that exposes them to high levels of risk. It follows four women’s organizations who break with traditional gender norms and defy armed groups’ social and territorial control, exposing them to retributive punishment. It provides rich evidence to document how women are able to surmount the barriers to mobilization when they frame their actions in terms of resistance, rather than fear.

No obstante, a medida que se dieron avances en la apertura de espacios de formación y ciudadanía femenina, la universidad se convirtió, y aún lo sigue siendo, en una institución que promovió la aceptación de mujeres en diversos espacios de conocimiento, demostrando que sus programas académicos tienen como principio de ingreso la aceptación por méritos y no por estrategias de sexualización. Con esto, la posibilidad de que las mujeres se formaran en las ingenierías, las ciencias básicas, las ciencias de la salud, las artes, las ciencias sociales y humanas ha sido una realidad y un principio rector de esta institución.

This book draws on participatory ethnographic research to understand how rural Colombian women work to dismantle the coloniality of power. This original study examines women's activism against war in areas as far apart as Sierra Leone, India, Colombia and Palestine. It shows women on different sides of conflicts in the former Yugoslavia and Israel addressing racism and refusing enmity and describes international networks of women opposing US and Western European militarism and the so-called 'war on terror'. These movements, though diverse, are generating an antimilitarist feminism that challenges how war and militarism are understood, both in academic studies and the mainstream anti-war movement.
