Early modern women writers left their mark in multiple domains--novels, translations, letters, history, and science. Although recent scholarship in literary and cultural studies has enriched our understanding of these accomplishments, less attention has been paid to other forms of women's writing. Women Moralists in Early Modern France explores the contributions of seventeenth and eighteenth-century French women philosophers and intellectuals to moralist writing, the observation of human motives and behavior. This distinctively French genre draws on philosophical and literary traditions extending back to classical antiquity. Moralist short forms such as the maxim, dialogue, character portrait, and essay engage social and political questions, epistemology, moral psychology, and virtue ethics. Although moralist writing was closely associated with the salon culture in which women played a major role, women's contributions to the genre have received scant scholarly attention. Julie Candler Hayes examines major moralist writers such as Madeleine de Scudéry, Anne-Thérèse de Lambert, Émilie Du Châtelet, and Germaine de Staël, as well as nearly two dozen of their contemporaries. Their reflections range from traditional topics such as the nature of the self, friendship, happiness, and old age, to issues that were very much part of their own lifeworld, such as the institution of marriage and women's nature and capabilities. Each chapter traces the evolution of women's moralist thought on a given topic from the late seventeenth century to the Enlightenment and the decades immediately following the French Revolution, a period of tremendous change in the horizon of possibilities for women as public figures and intellectuals. Hayes demonstrates how, through their critique of institutions and practices, their valorization of introspection and self-expression, and their engagement with philosophical issues, women moralists carved out an important space for the public exercise of their reason.

When Eileen O'Neill (1953-2017) published her ground-breaking essay, "Disappearing Ink: Early Modern Women Philosophers and the History of Philosophy" in 1998, women philosophers were virtually absent from encyclopedias of philosophy and the numerous histories and anthologies of early modern thought. This essay would come to have an enormous impact, signaling the beginning of the movement to introduce early modern women philosophers into the canon. In its densely-packed 46 pages, "Disappearing Ink" presented the names, major works, and principal theses of literally dozens of forgotten women, whose works were published during the early modern period and who had engaged in correspondence with central male figures but whose names and works had since been erased. Disappearing Ink reprints this now-canonical piece together with subsequent essays, some widely read, some harder to locate, and one, on "Cartesianism and the Gendered Mind", written in 2013 and published here for the first time. The essays in Part I develop O'Neill's views on feminist history of philosophy, articulating an account of feminist historiography that is inclusive yet at the same time textually nuanced. The essays in Part II provide in-depth treatment of individual figures and themes. These essays discuss the views of early modern women philosophers such as Mary Astell, Margaret Cavendish, and Mme de Lambert alongside those of Descartes, Leibniz, Poullain de la Barre, and the Scholastics, engaging with questions of mind-body interaction, occasional causation, physical influx, pan-organicism, and whether the Cartesian mind is gendered. The sole essay in Part III departs from the historical orientation of Parts I and II. This essay, informed by O'Neill's deep knowledge of art history, is an illuminating study of agency in representations of women in feminist erotic art of the 1980s. Combined, these works trace the complete arc of O'Neill's thought, from painstaking studies of individual themes and figures to a sweeping vision of how feminism should inform our approach to the history of early modern thought--indeed, to the history of philosophy more generally. More than anyone else, O'Neill explained why women were excluded from the canon and showed how they could be incorporated into it.

This book re-examines the roles of causation and cognition in early modern philosophy. The standard historical narrative suggests that early modern thinkers abandoned Aristotelian models of formal causation in favor of doctrines that appealed to relations of efficient causation between material objects and cognizers. This narrative has been criticized in recent scholarship from at least two directions. Scholars have emphasized that we should not think of the Aristotelian tradition in such monolithic terms, and that many early modern thinkers did not unequivocally reduce all causation to efficient causation. In line with this general approach, this book features original essays written by leading experts in early modern philosophy. It is organized around five guiding questions: What are the entities involved in causal processes leading to cognition? What type(s) or kind(s) of causality are at stake? Are early modern thinkers confined to efficient causation or do other types of causation play a role? What is God's role in causal processes leading to cognition? How do cognitive causal processes relate to other, non-cognitive causal processes? Is the causal process in the case of human cognition in any way special? How does it relate to processes involved in the case of non-human cognition?
