The term "femme" originates from 1940s Western working-class lesbian bar culture, wherein femme referred to a feminine lesbian who was typically in a relationship with a butch lesbian. Expanding from this original meaning, femme has since emerged as a form of femininity reclaimed by queer and culturally marginalized folks. Importantly, femme has also evolved into a theoretical framework. Femme theory argues that "femme" constitutes a missing piece in queer and feminist discourses of femininity. Attending to this gap, femme theory centres queer femininities as a means of pushing against the deeply embedded masculinist orientation of queer and gender theory. Thus, femme theory offers tools to shift the way researchers and readers understand femininity as well as systems of gender and power more broadly. This book is an introduction to femme theory, showcasing how femme can be used as a theoretical framework across a variety of contexts and disciplines, such as Film & Media Studies, Psychology, Sociology, or Critical Disability Studies; from countries, including Canada, China, Guyana and the USA. Femme theory asks readers to reconsider how femininity is conceptualized, revealing some of the many taken for granted assumptions that are embedded within cultural discourses of gender, sexuality, and power. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Lesbian Studies.

Eros of International Relations: Self-Feminizing and the Claiming of Postcolonial Chineseness is a distinctive work that explores the much-neglected Chinese perspective in broader international relations theory. Using the concept of “self-feminizing”—adoption of a feminine identity to oblige and achieve mutual caring as a relational strategy—this book argues that postcolonial actors have employed gendered identities in order to survive the squeezing pressure of globalization and nationalism in their own ways. Sovereign actors who have historically claimed to act on behalf of Chineseness have taken advantage of the images of femininity thrust upon them by transnational capitalism, the media, or intellectual thought. Shih illustrates the feminist potential for emancipation through a range of empirical examples, showing that women of various Chinese characteristics, acting on behalf of their nation, city, and corporations, reject the masculinization of their groups of belonging as remedy for inferiority or threat. Carried out effectively, Shih argues, actors who self-feminize have the potential to deconstruct the binaries of masculine competition and seek alternative strategies under the postcolonial global order. This phenomenon, called the “Gender Switch”, initialized the quantitative feminization of public relations (Dozier, 1988, p.8). In 1986 Mathews wrote: “A women`s place is no longer in the home. It seems to be in the communication department.” (Matthews, 1986, p.28). At the end of the 1990s, according to the US Department of Labor, two thirds of PR specialists were women (Grunig, Toth & Hon, 2001, p.5).

While the decline of the male hero in nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature is usually studied in isolation, Druxes uses a major manifestation of this phenomenon&—the failing power of the Faust myth&—as an interpretive lens through which to illuminate the corresponding rise in the viability of female Faustian heroes or would-be heroes. Her study of the female Faust figure in the realist novels of Stendhal, Gauthier, Keller, James, and the contemporary writer Morgner is further unusual in that she carries out her analyses both against the background of the sociohistorical factors conditioning these female figures and with reference to the mutual interaction of plot and novel form. Since nineteenth-century writers make female subjectivity the arena in which the conflicts of male subjecthood are debated, their attempts to create female versions of the heroic quest for self-knowledge speak not only to the crisis of the male model but also to the crisis of the realistic novel. Using psychoanalytic theory and French feminist and deconstructionist theory, Helga Druxes shows how the female Faustian quest for worldly knowledge and subjecthood develops a new concept of identity that takes its social constructedness into account, and she demonstrates some of the transgressive narrative strategies that male and female writers have employed, embodying their dissent not only in the creation of a female Faust but in their visions of an authentic female desire for selfhood and socially regenerative female bonding.

While men and women used to enter the field of psychotherapy at an almost equal rate, the past 15 years have seen a drastic shift: Statistics clearly show that women are entering the mental health professions in huge numbers at the same time that the incoming number of men is on the decline. Although there has been little professional acknowledgment, it is apparent that psychotherapy is undergoing a fundamental transformation into an all-women's field. This volume presents a brilliant and impassioned analysis of this dramatic alteration. On the Shoulders of Women demonstrates that the feminization of psychotherapy will have lasting effects on the theories guiding the work of psychotherapists within the consulting room, their views of psychopathology and human development, and even the techniques and goals of psychotherapeutic practice. In a provocative discussion, this volume reveals the ways the current paradigm shift in psychoanalysis--from drive theory to a relational model--is deeply embedded in the gender recomposition of the field. Just as women represented the "other" in the traditional Freudian paradigm, which had its roots in the patriarchal family of late nineteenth century Vienna and was practiced largely by men, so now men may be approaching a similar status within the emerging relational model. The author asserts that the implications of the feminization of psychotherapy go even further, transcending the boundaries of clinical theory and practice altogether. There is little question that psychotherapy is currently a field in crisis: professional publications tell of the recent "mental health care revolution," in which public and private sector funding and support for both short- and long-term psychotherapeutic care are declining rapidly. Ironically, while the prestige and financial rewards to be gained in the field of psychotherapy appear to be decreasing, the overall number of new psychotherapists has grown. On the Shoulders of Women maintains that the fate of psychotherapy and its increasingly female body of practitioners speaks to our society's devaluation of care-giving in general and women's identification with this arena of life.
