Podria parecer banal preguntar por el cuerpo en una sociedad tan erotizada como la actual. Sin embargo, la banalidad desaparece cuando no preguntamos por la imagen del cuerpo, sino por el cuerpo como vivencia de nuestra existencia humana. " Que es el propio cuerpo? El propio cuerpo es mi subjetividad atingida por los otros en el mundo de la vida. Esta atingencia es inalienable en el sentido de que nunca podemos dejar de lado nuestra vivencia de hambre, dolor o placer. Esta atingencia es el modo en que el propio cuerpo esta impregnado por el mundo y el modo en que el mundo esta impregnado por el propio cuerpo. No es una relacion de sujeto objeto, sino una relacion dinamica y reciproca entre nuestro propio cuerpo, los otros y el mundo. Sin el propio cuerpo no hay mundo, sin este tampoco habria el primero. Ambos son reciprocos por atingencia subjetiva. El propio cuerpo es lo unico que nos hace irremplazables e indispensables en el mundo; por ello, el propio cuerpo es una subjetividad atingida atmosfericamente al mundo de la vida. La atingencia del propio cuerpo se manifiesta en tres dimensiones intencional-operativas: cinetica, afectiva y comunicativa."

Merleau-Ponty todavia puede cargar con justicia aquel titulo a la vez demasiado vago y demasiado pesado que algunos contemporaneos le concedieron al hablar del "filosofo del cuerpo." El proposito dominante y singular de su obra reside en volver a mirar con nuevos ojos los misterios de nuestra experiencia carnal y sensible. Abrir lalectura del corpus merleaupontyano solo puede significar entonces abrir de nuevo la interrogacion por el cuerpo, escuchar y dar expresion filosofica a ese otro yo que somos y que nos interpela sin hablar: "este cuerpo actual que llamo mio, el centinela que asiste silenciosamente a mis palabras y mis actos." Para volver a pensar radicalmente que es el cuerpo mas alla de la definicion residual provista por el dualismo cartesiano Merleau-Ponty recurre a las herramientas metodologicas provistas por la fenomenologia de Husserl: una filosofia de la "conciencia trascendental" que Merleau-Ponty revelara como heredera secreta de la revolucion intelectual iniciada por los pensadores decimononicos de la animalidad, del inconciente, de la historia y del cuerpo.
