Ferry Stories Of The Hokianga written by Susy Pointon and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with Hokianga Harbour (N.Z.) categories.

"A new collection of real and fictional stories about the Hokianga ferry ... and some of the more sensational tales are true. The book, Ferry Stories of the Hokianga: Ngā kōrero o Hokianga mai I te waka whakawhiti, was a community project led by local author Susy Pointon. It is Pointon's third book of Hokianga stories but is different from her first two in that many of the stories are true and supplied by locals, rather than her own fiction. "Some of them are real stories that people have given me. There's also a couple of poems about the ferry, lots of photos. I describe it as a sort of posh scrapbook," Pointon said. One of the true stories is about a P dealer who attempted to hijack the Rawene-Kohukohu ferry while fleeing from police. "That happened about 10 years ago, I think. I just took the story down from the deckhand," Pointon said. "It may not be entirely factual but it's what he experienced that day." -- Publishers description.

Hokianga was one of the areas first to be populated, over 600 years before the arrival of Europeans. In contrast to other areas settled by Pakeha during the 1800s, the local chiefs controlled - in a political sense - the early settlers to the Hokianga, and dominated the resources of the country on which the newcomers depended for their livelihood. Lee discusses how war, religion, timber and ship-building industries, as well as intermarriage, contribute to our present-day understanding of events that have shaped those communities that surround the harbour.

New Zealand S Worst Disasters written by Graham Hutchins and has been published by Exisle Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-01 with History categories.

A full train plunges into a raging river at Tangiwai; the Wahine is tossed onto rocks at the entrance to Wellington Harbour; an Air New Zealand DC-10 plunges into Mt Erebus; an earthquake destroys Christchurch … disasters like these are known to all New Zealanders: they are part of our history. But New Zealand has experienced many less well-known disasters, some of them shocking and brutal. Graham Hutchins and Russell Young describe some of the most extraordinary events in New Zealand history. Who knew that a fire killed 39 people at Seacliff Mental Hospital in 1942? That 10 people died in a lahar on White Island in 1914? That a yacht race between Lyttelton and Wellington in 1951 resulted in 10 fatalities? That a tornado ripped through 150 houses in Hamilton in 1948? A fire raging through Raetihi in 1918 was so fierce it destroyed houses, shops and 11 timber mills. Drownings were so common here in the 19th century that they were called ‘the New Zealand death’. These and many other remarkable stories are told in this eye-opening book. While it describes accidents and tragedies, it also reveals acts of heroism. For when human beings make mistakes, others often achieve daring feats of rescue. Some of the stories show that we underestimate Mother Nature at our peril, but many also testify to the courage of the human spirit. Few books are genuine page-turners; this one is.

Tears Of Rangi written by Anne Salmond and has been published by Auckland University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-24 with History categories.

Six centuries ago Polynesian explorers, who inhabited a cosmos in which islands sailed across the sea and stars across the sky, arrived in Aotearoa New Zealand where they rapidly adapted to new plants, animals, landscapes and climatic conditions. Four centuries later, European explorers arrived with maps and clocks, grids and fences, and they too adapted to a new island home. In this remote, beautiful archipelago, settlers from Polynesia and Europe (and elsewhere) have clashed and forged alliances, they have fiercely debated what is real and what is common sense, what is good and what is right. In this, her most ambitious book to date, Dame Anne Salmond looks at New Zealand as a site of cosmo-diversity, a place where multiple worlds engage and collide. Beginning with a fine-grained inquiry into the early period of encounters between Māori and Europeans in New Zealand (1769–1840), Salmond then investigates such clashes and exchanges in key areas of contemporary life – waterways, land, the sea and people. We live in a world of gridded maps, Outlook calendars and balance sheets – making it seem that this is the nature of reality itself. But in New Zealand, concepts of whakapapa and hau, complex networks and reciprocal exchange, may point to new ways of understanding interactions between peoples, and between people and the natural world. Like our ancestors, Anne Salmond suggests, we too may have a chance to experiment across worlds.
