Als eine Fortsetzung der Vorlesungen, die ich im Winter vor drei Jahren allhier an derselben Stätte gehalten, und welche unter dem Titel: »Grundzüge des gegenwärtigen Zeitalters« gedruckt sind, habe ich die Reden, [Fußnote] die ich hiermit beginne, angekündigt. Ich hatte in jenen Vorlesungen gezeigt, daß unsere Zeit in dem dritten Hauptabschnitte der gesammten Weltzeit stehe, welcher Abschnitt den blosen sinnlichen Eigennutz zum Antriebe aller seiner lebendigen Regungen und Bewegungen habe; daß diese Zeit in der einzigen Möglichkeit des genannten Antriebes sich selbst auch vollkommen verstehe und begreife; und daß sie durch diese klare Einsicht ihres Wesens in diesem ihren lebendigen Wesen, tief begründet und unerschütterlich befestigt werde. Mit uns gehet, mehr als mit irgend einem Zeitalter, seitdem es eine Weltgeschichte gab, die Zeit Riesenschritte. Innerhalb der drei Jahre, welche seit dieser meiner Deutung des laufenden Zeitabschnittes verflossen sind, ist irgendwo dieser Abschnitt vollkommen abgelaufen und beschlossen. Irgendwo hat die Selbstsucht durch ihre vollständige Entwickelung sich selbst vernichtet, indem sie darüber ihr Selbst, und dessen Selbständigkeit, verloren; und ihr, da sie gutwillig keinen andern Zweck, denn sich selbst, sich setzen wollte, durch äußerliche Gewalt ein solcher anderer und fremder Zweck aufgedrungen worden. Wer es einmal unternommen hat, seine Zeit zu deuten, der muß mit seiner Deutung auch ihren Fortgang begleiten, falls sie einen solchen Fortgang gewinnt; und so wird es mir denn zur Pflicht, vor demselben Publikum, vor welchem ich etwas als Gegenwart bezeichnete, dasselbe als vergangen anzuerkennen, nachdem es aufgehört hat, die Gegenwart zu sein.

Owen Ware here develops and defends a novel interpretation of Fichte's moral philosophy as an ethics of wholeness. While virtually forgotten for most of the twentieth century, Fichte's System of Ethics (1798) is now recognized by scholars as a masterpiece in the history of post-Kantian philosophy, as well as a key text for understanding the work of later German idealist thinkers. This book provides a careful examination of the intellectual context in which Fichte's moral philosophy evolved, and of the specific arguments he offers in response to Kant and his immediate successors. A distinctive feature of this study is a focus on the foundational concepts of Fichte's ethics--freedom, morality, feeling, conscience, community--and their connection to his innovative but largely misunderstood theory of drives. By way of conclusion, the book shows that what appears to be two conflicting commitments in Fichte's ethics--a commitment to the feelings of one's conscience and a commitment to engage in open dialogue with others--are two aspects of his theory of moral perfection. The result is a sharp understanding of Fichte's System of Ethics as offering a compelling resolution to the personal and interpersonal dimensions of moral life

Fichte's 1804 Wissenschaftslehre, or The Science of Knowing, consists of a series of lectures he delivered in his Berlin home to members of the city's political and cultural elite in 1804. The lectures mark a dramatic shift in the terminology and methodology he uses to explore the nature of knowledge and reality as presented in his philosophical system, the Wissenschaftslehre. Although not published during his lifetime, Fichte's 1804 lectures provide a systematic update to his philosophy of knowledge and being, which was only hinted at in print in popular presentations like Characteristics of the Present Age (1805) and The Way Towards the Blessed Life (1806).
