"This study explains how one of the remarkable thinkers of the Italian Renaissance, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494), broke new ground by engaging with the scholastic tradition while maintaining his 'humanist' sensibilities. A central claim of the monograph is that Pico was a 'philosopher at the crossroads', whose sophisticated reading of numerous scholastic thinkers enabled him to advance a different conception of philosophy. The scholastic background to Pico's work has been neglected by historians of the period. This omission has served to create not only an unreliable portrait of Pico's thought, but a more general ignorance of the dynamism of scholastic thought in late fifteenth-century Italy. The books argues that these deficiencies of modern scholarship stand in need of correction"--

Revelation In Christian Theologies Of Religions written by Iain McGee and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-04 with Religion categories.

What are non-Christian religions? How is God related to them? How do they relate to Christianity? In this original book, Iain McGee explores five Christian theologians’ answers to these questions. The study spans the history of the church, covering figures from four different continents: Justin Martyr, Augustine, John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, and Daniel Strange. Focusing on the revelation-religion interface in the writings of these scholars, McGee outlines and analyzes their varied understandings of Logos illumination, the prisca theologia, and the demonic, alongside the relationships between them and their impact on non-Christian religion. McGee forwards an argument that each theology can be considered a biblically informed, contextually reflective, and reactive response to significant religious challenges faced by these Christian thinkers in their attempts to demonstrate the uniqueness of the Christian faith.

Re Evaluating Pico written by Sophia Howlett and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-01 with Political Science categories.

This book offers a re-evaluation of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, the prominent Italian Renaissance philosopher and prince of Concord. It argues that Pico is part of a history of attempted concordance between philosophy and theology, reason and faith. His contribution is a syncretist theological philosophy based on Christianity, Platonism, Aristotelianism and Jewish Kabbalism. After an introduction, Chapter 2 discusses Pico’s career, his power-relations and his work, Chapters 3 and 4 place his three pillars of Platonism, Aristotelianism and Kabbalism in their historical context, examines shared histories, and introduces the scholars around Pico who contributed so much in each of these traditions (introducing, for example, Christian Kabbalism), including exploring Pico's complex relationship with Marsilio Ficino. Chapter 5 examines the problems of concordance within Pico’s cosmology and metaphysics, including the question of God and the role of the Intellect. Chapter 6 describes Pico’s ‘exceptionalist’ version of the mystical ascent as an individualized ascetic experience. Pico eschews the contemporary desire to use a renewed christian thinking or christian-classical metaphysics to change the world (towards a Golden Age or a 'second coming') to present a personal path to God, with no return to the world.

Contextualizing Michelangelo’s poetry and spirituality within the framework of the religious Zeitgeist of his era, this study investigates his poetic production to shed new light on the artist’s religious beliefs and unique language of art. Author Ambra Moroncini looks first and foremost at Michelangelo the poet and proposes a thought-provoking reading of Michelangelo’s most controversial artistic production between 1536 and c.1550: The Last Judgment, his devotional drawings made for Vittoria Colonna, and his last frescoes for the Pauline Chapel. Using theological and literary analyses which draw upon reformist and Protestant scriptural writings, as well as on Michelangelo’s own rime spirituali and Vittoria Colonna’s spiritual lyrics, Moroncini proposes a compelling argument for the impact that the Reformation had on one of the greatest minds of the Italian Renaissance. It brings to light how, in the second quarter of the sixteenth century in Italy, Michelangelo’s poetry and aesthetic conception were strongly inspired by the revived theologia crucis of evangelical spirituality, rather than by the theologia gloriae of Catholic teaching.

Marsilio Ficino And His World written by Sophia Howlett and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-27 with Political Science categories.

This book makes the case for Marsilio Ficino, a Renaissance philosopher and priest, as a canonical thinker, and provides an introduction for a broad audience. Sophia Howlett examines him as part of the milieu of Renaissance Florence, part of a history of Platonic philosophy, and as a key figure in the ongoing crisis between classical revivalism and Christian belief. The author discusses Ficino’s vision of a Platonic Christian universe with multiple worlds inhabited by angels, daemons and pagan gods, as well as our own distinctive role within that universe - climbing the heights to talk with angels yet constantly confused by the evidence of our own senses. Ficino as the “new Socrates” suggests to us that by changing ourselves, we can change our world.
