The twentieth century was a period of rapid change for religion. Secularisation resulted in a dramatic fall in church attendance in the West, and the 1950s and 1960s saw the introduction of new religions including the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), the Church of Scientology, and the Children of God. New religions were regarded with suspicion by society in general and Religious Studies scholars alike until the 1990s, when the emergence of a second generation of 'new new' religions – based on popular cultural forms including films, novels, computer games and comic books – and highly individualistic spiritualities confirmed the utter transformation of the religio-spiritual landscape. Indeed, Scientology and ISKCON appeared almost traditional and conservative when compared to the radically de-institutionalised, eclectic, parodic, fun-loving and experimental fiction-based, invented and hyper-real religions. In this book, scholarly treatments of cutting-edge religious and spiritual trends are brought into conversation with contributions by representatives of Dudeism, the Church of All Worlds, the Temple of the Jedi Order and Tolkien spirituality groups. This book will simultaneously entertain, shock, challenge and delight scholars of religious studies, as well as those with a wider interest in new religious movements.

To the casual observer, similarities between fan communities and religious believers are difficult to find. Religion is traditional, institutional, and serious; whereas fandom is contemporary, individualistic, and fun. Can the robes of nuns and priests be compared to cosplay outfits of Jedi Knights and anime characters? Can travelling to fan conventions be understood as pilgrimages to the shrines of saints? These new essays investigate fan activities connected to books, film, and online games, such as Harry Potter-themed weddings, using The Hobbit as a sacred text, and taking on heroic roles in World of Warcraft. Young Muslim women cosplayers are brought into conversation with Chaos magicians who use pop culture tropes and characters. A range of canonical texts, such as Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Sherlock--are examined in terms of the pleasure and enchantment of repeated viewing. Popular culture is revealed to be a fertile source of religious and spiritual creativity in the contemporary world.

"As technologies that work by computing numbers, digital media apparently epitomize what is considered scientific and rational. Yet, people experience the effects of digital devices and algorithms in their everyday life also through the lenses of magic and the supernatural. Algorithms, for instance, are discussed for their capacity to "read minds" and predict the future; Artificial Intelligence as an opportunity to overcome death and achieve immortality through singularity; and avatars and robots are accorded a dignity that traditional religions restricted to humans. The essays collected in this volume address these and similar phenomena, challenging and redefining established understandings of digital media and culture by employing the notions of belief, religion, and the supernatural." -- Provided by publisher.

Beyond Religion And The Secular written by Wayne Hudson and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-17 with Religion categories.

Deploying a distinctive disaggregative approach to the study of 'religion', this volume shows that spiritual movements with extensive counterfactual beliefs have been much more creative than one might expect. Specifically, Wayne Hudson explores the creativity of six spiritual movements: the Bahá'ís, a Persian movement; Soka Gakkai, a Japanese movement; Ananda Marga and the Brahma Kumaris, two reformed Hindu movements; and two controversial American churches, The Church Universal and Triumphant and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Most of these movements have counterintuitive features that have led Western scholars making Enlightenment assumptions to dismiss them as irrational and/or inconsequential. However, this book reveals that these movements have responded to modernity in ways that are creative and practical, resulting in a wide range of social, educational and cultural initiatives. Building on research surrounding the ways in which spiritual movements engage in cultural productions, this book takes the international research in a new direction by exploring the utopian intentionality such cultural productions reveal.

Immerse yourself in the future of entertainment with the world's first comprehensive book on the subject of hyper-reality design. Written by VOID founder and professional illusion/experience designer, Curtis Hickman, this book explores the theory and practice of creating virtual worlds that seem so real - guests often forget they're not. In 2015, Curtis co-founded "The VOID," a company dedicated to immersive entertainment. By partnering with major studios like Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Sony, The VOID brought award-winning hyper-realities to life, allowing guests to experience incredible adventures such as facing Darth Vader on Mustafar or fighting Ultron with the Avengers. What makes these experiences so special is that not only do everyday things seem real, but impossible things seem real as well. When guests see fire - they feel heat and smell smoke and when they see rain - they feel rain and when they magically walk through a wall, it feels as though they are defying physics and literally walking through a wall! In "Hyper-Reality," Curtis shares his secrets for making the impossible a reality. He provides practical examples every step of the way, exploring concepts such as how to physically teleport someone without them knowing it, how to make a fictional reality feel very, VERY real, or how to give guests superpowers they will never forget. Best of all, this is not only a resource for VR designers but also for anyone interested in experience design. Curtis provides real-world (non-VR) examples, making it an essential read for all those wanting to add magic and wonder to their guests' adventures. He also delves into the art and science of immersive storytelling, exploring the techniques used to craft truly unforgettable experiences. From world-building to player agency, this book offers insights and practical advice for anyone looking to create immersive narratives. With the market for experiential entertainment booming worldwide, "Hyper-Reality" is a must-have addition to your collection. Don't miss out on the chance to learn from the inventor and "magician of hyper-reality" himself.
