Go back to The Future Is Female in this all new collection of wildly entertaining stories by the trailblazing feminist writers who transformed American science fiction in the 1970s In the 1970s, feminist authors created a new mode of science fiction in defiance of the “baboon patriarchy”—Ursula Le Guin’s words—that had long dominated the genre, imagining futures that are still visionary. In this sequel to her groundbreaking 2018 anthology The Future is Female!: 25 Classic Science Fiction Stories by Women from Pulp Pioneers to Ursula K. Le Guin, SF-expert Lisa Yaszek offers a time machine back to the decade when far-sighted rebels changed science fiction forever with stories that made female community, agency, and sexuality central to the American future. Here are twenty-three wild, witty, and wonderful classics that dramatize the liberating energies of the 1970s: Sonya Dorman, “Bitching It” (1971) Kate Wilhelm, “The Funeral” (1972) Joanna Russ, “When It Changed” (1972) NEBULA AWARD Miriam Allen deFord, “A Way Out”(1973) Vonda N. McIntyre, “Of Mist, and Grass, and Sand” (1973) NEBULA James Tiptree, Jr., “The Girl Who Was Plugged In” (1973) HUGO AWARD Kathleen Sky, “Lament of the Keeku Bird” (1973) Ursula K. Le Guin, “The Day Before the Revolution” (1974) NEBULA & LOCUS AWARD Eleanor Arnason, “The Warlord of Saturn’s Moons” (1974) Kathleen M. "... Changing the Story... gives an excellent and well-informed account of the differences between the American, Canadian, British, and French attitudes towards feminism and feminist fiction and literary theory.... a very readable book... which reminds us that literature can change us, and that through it we can change ourselves." -- Margaret Drabble "A distinctive contribution -- clear, elegant, precise, and well-read -- to the feminist discussion of narrative, of Anglo/Canadian/white North American novelists, and to contemporary fiction. Greene tracks how feminist novelists draw upon, and negotiate with traditional narrative patterns, and how their critical approach implicates, and provokes, social change. The book brings us to an intelligent post-humanism which does not scant the social meanings of metafictional critique. And, in addition, this book remembers hope." -- Rachel Blau DuPlessis "Changing the Story is an invaluable guide to the feminist classics of the last three decades. This is cultural criticism at its best: engaged, re-visionary, and politically astute." -- Nancy K. Miller "Greene tells a very good tale about how feminist fiction emerged, developed, made changes in the world, and now threatens to wane." -- The Women's Review of Books "Her probing analysis... should captivate general readers as well as academics." -- WLW Journal "Changing the Story is an important work of feminist criticism certain to spark controversy within the feminist community." -- American Literature The feminist fiction movement of the 1960s--1980s was and is as significant a movement as Modernism. Gayle Greene focuses on the works of Doris Lessing, Margaret Drabble, Margaret Atwood, and Margaret Laurence to trace the roots of this feminist literary explosion. She also speculates on the future of feminist fiction in the current regressive period of "post feminism."

A cultural icon of the fin de siècle , the New Woman was not one figure, but several. In the guise of a bicycling, cigarette-smoking Amazon, the New Woman romped through the pages of Punch and popular fiction; as a neurasthenic victim of social oppression, she suffered in the pages of New Woman novels such as Sarah Grand's hugely successful The Heavenly Twins . The New Woman in Fiction and Fact marks a radically new departure in nineteenth-century scholarship to explore the polyvocal nature of the late Victorian debates around gender, motherhood, class, race and imperialism which converged in the name of the New Woman.

"A justification for paying serious attention to science fiction may by now be necessary only for other literary critics and scholars. Still, the question of why a book addressing itself to science fiction has to be faced briefly." This comment, the opening statement of Darko Suvins' recent book, is of concern to Professor Barr, editor of this volume, since Future Females is addressing itself to women in science fiction. Metaphorically speaking, if the mere mention of the genre causes a ruffling of academic feathers, then, relating to women is analogous to placing all those simply ruffled feathers in front of a wind machine. Everyone will not welcome a volume where science fiction is viewed in terms of women, but Professor Barr felt such a volume is needed. As Roger Schlobin's bibliography indicates, women are certainly contributing continuously to the science fiction field. This collection of essays illuminates some of this fiction.
