Laminated root rot, caused by the fungus Phellinus weirii, spreads by root contact between healthy trees and infected trees or stumps. This publication presents a methodology for detection of this disease, describes features of infected trees, and discusses factors affecting disease incidence & spread of laminated root rot. The information is applicable to those areas where non-susceptible coniferous species and/or deciduous trees form a significant component of the stand and where the first-growth stand consists of susceptible species.

Coastal areas of British Columbia with non-commercial forest cover that are considered for rehabilitation under the Forest Resource Development Agreement should ideally be planted to Douglas-fir. However, these areas have often been previously covered with Douglas-fir infected by laminated root-rot, a disease spread from infected stumps to healthy tree roots. This memo describes the development & testing of a site evaluation procedure for laminated root-rot assessment in coastal rehabilitation areas. It outlines factors related to the spread of this disease, the determination of a hazard rating, the choice of survey technique, and results of a field assessment of the effectiveness of the post-harvest survey technique. A table compares pre- & post-harvest root-rot survey characteristics for rehabilitation areas.

"This report from the Washington State Academy of Sciences (WSAS) is in response to a request from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to "identify approaches and opportunities ripe for research on understanding and managing root diseases of Douglas-fir." Similar to the process used by the National Research Council, the WSAS upon agreeing to undertake a project such as requested by the DNR assembles a committee of state, regional, national, and/or international experts, as needed; develops a statement of task to guide the study; conducts the study; and makes recommendations based on the findings. The Committee that conducted this study included federal (both U.S. and Canadian), state, university, and private company representation from Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia."

Laminated root rot, caused by the fungal pathogen Phellinus weirii, is manageable at most phases of stand growth and stand management. This synopsis presents a chronological sequence of management techniques to assess and control root rot damage in free-growing forests for pre-harvest prescriptions and in regenerating forests. It includes a site evaluation checklist, a table of sensitivity factors, and lists recommended alternate tree species for infected sites, by site unit.
