Excerpt from Fields of Fame in England and Scotland As the dramatic spectacles of war, and of the movements of marching men, are thrilling to the onlooker, so it is not strange that the narratives of wars and battles, which appeal powerfq to the imagination, have a stronger human interest than the records of the peaceful pursuits and achieve ments of statesmen or of the common people. His tory would be dull reading without the deeds of valour and the glory thereof. It will not, then, be thought an entirely whimsical design of the present writer if he attempts to present in collective form brief narratives of the chief battles of England and Scotland, with occasional references to his personal visits to these Fields of Fame. The Enlightenment And The Book written by Richard B. Sher and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

The late eighteenth century witnessed an explosion of intellectual activity in Scotland by such luminaries as David Hume, Adam Smith, Hugh Blair, William Robertson, Adam Ferguson, James Boswell, and Robert Burns. And the books written by these seminal thinkers made a significant mark during their time in almost every field of polite literature and higher learning throughout Britain, Europe, and the Americas. In this magisterial history, Richard B. Sher breaks new ground for our understanding of the Enlightenment and the forgotten role of publishing during that period. The Enlightenment and the Book seeks to remedy the common misperception that such classics as The Wealth of Nations and The Life of Samuel Johnson were written by authors who eyed their publishers as minor functionaries in their profession. To the contrary, Sher shows how the process of bookmaking during the late eighteenth-century involved a deeply complex partnership between authors and their publishers, one in which writers saw the book industry not only as pivotal in the dissemination of their ideas, but also as crucial to their dreams of fame and monetary gain. Similarly, Sher demonstrates that publishers were involved in the project of bookmaking in order to advance human knowledge as well as to accumulate profits. The Enlightenment and the Book explores this tension between creativity and commerce that still exists in scholarly publishing today. Lavishly illustrated and elegantly conceived, it will be must reading for anyone interested in the history of the book or the production and diffusion of Enlightenment thought.

Classic Golf Links Of England Scotland Wales And Ireland written by Donald Steel and has been published by Pelican Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-01-01 with Sports & Recreation categories.

Seaside links courses offer golfers unmatched challenges and enchanting scenery. And while they can be found in many parts of the world, the links of the British Isles are the most famous in their class. Donald Steel takes readers on a tour of seventy-five spectacular greens along windswept beaches and sheer cliffs of Britain and Ireland. These links prove true the old belief that courses are for expanding a player's abilities, rather than defining and confining them as in so many other sports. Steel offers up destinations like St. Andrews, Royal St. George's, and Formby, Ballybunion, and Muirfield among the seaside playing fields that have been the home to championship tournaments and amateur aspirations. With scorecards, maps, color photos, and helpful hints for most holes, this guide is an essential reference tool for the traveling golfer. It tells the history of the courses it covers and provides information on the designers who built them and the pros who have set their records. Brian Morgan's stunning photography handsomely captures the majestic layout of the courses. From the deceptive lengths to the treacherous traps, his visual log of the courses prepares golfers for the beauty and challenges that await them. His award-winning and world-renowned pictures have appeared in golf journals on both sides of the Atlantic and in several exhibitions.

Silent Fields written by Roger Lovegrove and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-02-22 with Nature categories.

Since time immemorial mankind has taken it upon himself to wage war against nature — against those species of birds and mammals which he believes conflict with his livelihood. This remarkable book is about that war of attrition against the native mammals and birds of England and Wales from the middle ages to the present day. There is widespread knowledge about the huge declines in popular species such as song birds, farmland birds, otters, and pine martens, however, there is less understanding about the deep-rooted causes of these losses, or about the complex relationship between mankind and these species. Roger Lovegrove has undertaken years of unique research: by searching through parish records of 'vermin' trapped, hunted, and killed over the generations, he has revealed an unprecedentedly accurate and detailed picture of the history of a nation's wildlife, and of the often devastating impact and extinction that we have forced on our ecology. Consisting of species-by-species accounts, accompanied by beautiful, specially-commissioned illustrations, this book outlines the history - and often the future too - of a wealth of wildlife species, from badgers, bears and beavers, to wolves, kingfishers, the golden eagle and the humble house sparrow. The geographical scope is British, but the subject will be of interest to conservationists around the world because of the unique historical material that will be included. The topic has enormous relevance today, as public concern about the environment rises, and controversies rage about hunting, wildlife management and reintroduction of ancient species.

Scottish Canoe Classics written by Eddie Palmer and has been published by Pesda Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Sports & Recreation categories.

An illustrated guide to some of the finest tours of Scotland's waterways. Wild lochs, placid canals and broad rivers, as they can only be seen from a canoe or kayak. Eddie has chosen his favourite twenty-five inland touring routes and described them in great detail. The routes are beautifully illustrated with numerous colour photos and maps. The selected routes are suitable for open canoes, sit-on-tops and touring kayaks. Many of them can be tackled as a single voyage or a series of day trips, with campsites en route. The journeys are all accessible but highly varied, taking place on inland lochs, sheltered sea lochs and rivers (of an easy nature, up to grade two). A wonderful book for planning voyages and inspiring dreams, or sharing your experiences with others.
