This book is part of an ongoing transnational turn in cultural history. Studies on the history of urban popular culture and the entertainment industries increasingly engage with the European or global circulation of genres, actors, and shows, especially during the period of massive growth and expansion of the sector from the 1870s to the 1930s. Nevertheless, a large part of this research remains focused on exchanges between Western and Central European, and North American metropolises. To provide a fuller picture of the emergence and cross-border transfer of different genres of popular culture, this volume investigates Northern, East Central, and Southern European cities and their relations with each other and the West. The authors analyze the mediating agents, transnational networks, and local responses to new forms of entertainment from Madrid to Vyborg, and from Istanbul to Reykjavík. These examples re-focus the history of urban popular culture in Europe in view of multidirectional transfers and a wider range of regional experiences. Inventing the Recording focuses on the decades in which recorded sound went from a technological possibility to a commercial and cultural artefact. Through the analysis of a specific and unique national context, author Eva Moreda Rodríguez tells the stories of institutions and individuals in Spain and discusses the development of discourses and ideas in close connection with national concerns and debates, all while paying close attention to original recordings from this era. The book starts with the arrival in Spain of notices about Edison's invention of the phonograph in 1877, followed by the first demonstrations of the invention (1878-1882) by scientists and showmen. These demonstrations greatly stimulated the imagination of scientists, journalists and playwrights, who spent the rest of the 1880s speculating about the phonograph and its potential to revolutionize society once it was properly developed and marketed. The book then moves on to analyse the 'traveling phonographs' and salones fonográficos of the 1890s and early 1900s, with phonographs being paraded around Spain and exhibited in group listening sessions in theatres, private homes and social spaces pertaining to different social classes. Finally, the book covers the development of an indigenous recording industry dominated by the so-called gabinetes fonográficos, small businesses that sold imported phonographs, produced their own recordings, and shaped early discourses about commercial phonography and the record as a commodity between 1896 and 1905.

La literatura y el ocio en la sociedad cortesana del Siglo de Oro es un estudio histórico sobre el ideal del ocio laborioso, diferenciado de la ociosidad que consiste en no hacer nada. El enfoque resulta novedoso, ya que escasean las investigaciones sobre la historia moderna del otium, complementaria del negotium, quizá por haber sido considerada un tema de importancia menor con relación al trabajo. La principal hipótesis desarrollada tiene que ver con la revaloración del ocio laborioso ocurrida en el contexto de la sociedad cortesana de los siglos XVI y XVII, cuya herencia persiste con posterioridad a que se hubiesen producido las nuevas condiciones económicas y sociales propiciadas por la Revolución Industrial, desde el siglo XIX, de las que surgirá el ocio de masas. Durante el periodo preindustrial, sin embargo, también se produjeron manifestaciones culturales y festivas asociadas a diversas formas del ocio, analizadas a lo largo de los seis capítulos que conforman el libro. El primero resume un estado de la cuestión en el que se cuestiona la oposición absoluta, establecida por parte de la crítica, entre el ocio cortesano y el ocio de tipo letrado o humanista, de tradición ciceroniana. Después de abordar en el segundo apartado la tipología y las diferentes clases de ocio: lúdico, festivo y cultural, el tópico remedio literario de la ociosidad sirve, en el apartado tercero, de punto de partida para comprender la utilidad de la literatura desde la época renacentista, y también para justificar las diferentes variedades genéricas de la ficción literaria entonces predominantes, como la prosa dialogada y la narrativa que culmina en Cervantes, considerado desde esta nueva perspectiva. Para completar el panorama histórico-literario, el apartado cuarto se dedica al ocio poético de la tradición clásica española, articulado desde Garcilaso a Góngora, cuya ruptura condujo a la plena afirmación romántica de la autonomía del arte por el arte, mientras que el apartado quinto versa sobre el ocio teatral, analizando su importancia en el desarrollo de la controversia sobre la licitud del teatro que originada tras el triunfo de la comedia nueva, cuyo máximo exponente fuera Lope de Vega, perdura hasta la Memoria compuesta por Jovellanos a finales del siglo XVIII, marcando el final de una etapa en las valoraciones tradicionales que identificaban en exclusiva el ocio con la ociosidad. En el apartado sexto y último, se resume la evolución secular del homo otiosus desde su revalorización en la sociedad cortesana hasta el cambio que ha culminado en nuestra actual sociedad del espectáculo, o del entretenimiento, donde ha variado sustancialmente la función desempeñada por el ocio literario que, en el contexto de la Europa de las cortes, se había manifestado como parte del ocio laborioso opuesto, más que al trabajo, al vicio de la inútil ociosidad.

This volume brings together eleven case studies that address how the night became visible in the long and global eighteenth century through different mediums and in different geographical contexts. Situated on the eve of the introduction of artificial lighting, the long eighteenth century has much to say about night’s darkness and brilliance. The eighteenth century has been bound up epistemologically with images of light, reason, and order. Night and day, light and darkness, reason and mystery, however, are not necessarily at odds in the eighteenth century. In their analysis of narratives, poetry, urban spaces, music, the visual arts, and geological phenomena, the essays provide various frameworks to examine the representation, treatment, and meaning of the enlightened night. The transnational and multidisciplinary nature of the volume presents a survey of the research currently being done in the field of the long eighteenth-century night. This collection contributes to an ongoing exercise that questions the accepted definitions of the Enlightenment, and by bringing Eighteenth-Century Studies into dialogue with Night Studies, it enriches the critical conversation between these lines of research.

The pictorial turn in the humanities and social sciences has foregrounded the political power of images and the extent to which historical, political, social, and cultural processes and practices are shaped visually. Political iconographies are taken to interpret norms of actions, support ideological formations, and enhance moral concepts. Visual rhetorics are understood as active players in the construction and contestation of the political realm and public space. The twenty-one articles by scholars from Europe and the United States explore the political function and cultural impact of images from the perspectives of Art History, American Studies, Visual Culture Studies, History, and Political Science. The contributions in particular address the complex interplay between agent and addressee in the public space as well as issues of national identity, discourses of inclusion and exclusion, and the designation of political spaces within transnational contexts.
