Fighter For Democracy written by Beyene Solomon and has been published by Publishamerica Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This is the story of Beyene Solomon, who started and led a labor movement in Ethiopia encompassing several hundred thousand workers. It was the first democratic institution organized in Ethiopia and became an important part of African labor and social movement in the 1960-70s. However, when Emperor Haile Selassie was overthrown in 1974, Mr. Solomon was imprisoned. Surviving seven years of prison, he later worked for the ILO before he was forced out of Ethiopia in 1998. Beyene's memoir is the story of a brave and determined self-made man fighting and suffering for a democratic cause. And it is the sad story of the struggles of a proud African nation which is still in the throes of finding itself. Furthermore, it describes the diaspora of hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians and Eritreans, many who ended up as political refugees in the United States. His memoir is of historic significance. From Eritrea, Beyene Solomon left his farm to work in factories in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. Rebelling against management injustices, he helped form an Ethiopian labor movement. As President of the Confederation of Ethiopian Labor Unions (CELU), Beyene organized Ethiopian and Eritrean industrial workers and effectively fought for workers rights against government and management. He was instrumental in obtaining assistance from international labor groups and was active in African labor organizations. Until 1974 when the military overthrew the Emperor, CELU was part of an important democratization process in Ethiopia. While other prominent Ethiopians were murdered, Beyene Solomon miraculously survived, perhaps because of his local and international following. Until 1998 he had lived in Ethiopia for 52 years. Residing in Silver Spring, MD since 1999 with his children, he is now a US citizen.

Fighting Tyranny From Dictatorship To Democracy And The Anti Coup written by Gene Sharp and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12 with Political Science categories.

Fighting Tyranny combines two of Gene Sharp's books in a single pocket-sized volume - From Dictatorship to Democracy and The Anti-Coup. At a time when governments around the world are becoming increasingly authoritarian and aggressive towards their citizens, this book offers ideas and nonviolent methods of action to successfully defend or establish democratic systems. From Dictatorship to Democracy - A conceptual Framework for Liberation is a practical exploration of the techniques of nonviolent struggle against totalitarian regimes. This book has been used successfully by activists from all sides of the political spectrum, by grassroots activists and state-backed colour revolutionaries alike, to overthrow governments and effect political change. The Anti-Coup - co-authored with Bruce Jenkins - explores the possibilities of nonviolent defence against coups d'état. Coups may happen to a functioning democracy, or in the power vacuum that occurs after a government has been ousted. The Anti-Coup describes methods to block coups and putsch attempts which can be used by citizens and governments.

The Comparative International Politics Of Democracy Promotion written by Jonas Wolff and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-11 with Political Science categories.

Though scholarly attention to democracy promotion is increasing, there is still little comparative and theoretically-based work on the protagonists of democracy promotion. This book investigates the motives that drive democracy promotion in a comparative and theoretically oriented manner, exploring how democracy promoters deal with conflicting objectives and the factors that shape their behaviour. It also addresses the more policy-oriented debate on the contemporary challenges to democracy promotion, focusing on US and German policies towards three kinds of challenges: the emergence of ‘radical’ leftist governments in Bolivia and Ecuador, the political rise of Islamist movements in Turkey and Pakistan, and the consolidation of (semi-)authoritarian rule in Belarus and Russia. In each case, North-Western democracy promoters have been confronted with serious conflicts of objectives between security, economic interests and democracy promotion. The analysis and comparison of such situations in which democracy promoters have to deal with competing objectives and make tough decisions provides powerful evidence as to the factors that shape democracy promotion. The Comparative International Politics of Democracy Promotion will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations, comparative politics, democratization studies and foreign policy.

An amazing survival story which can easily pass for a thriller in the field of fiction. But it is true. Journalist Hilton Fyle packs his bags and heads back home to Sierra Leone after 20 years as a star broadcaster with the BBC in London England, during which he became a household name in Africa and most of the English-speaking world. His new challenge is to participate in the new democracy that the United States and its allies are planting in the country, after 25 years of dictatorship and oppression. Unfortunately, he gets a bad deal from the new, "democratic" government of president Tejan Kabba. His newspaper is forced to close after publishing a "Corruption" story involving two cabinet ministers. Kabba is overthrown in May 1997 and is planning to return with military force. But journalist Hilton Fyle uses his FM radio station to campaign for a peaceful return. Kabba does return with a bang. His opponents are shot and burned alive on the streets of the capital. Fyle escapes instant death, but he is beaten, imprisoned, tried and sent to Death Row awaiting execution. The climax of it all is that he walks out of Death Row without the consent of the government or the prison authorities. All this would not have happened he says, if United Nations peacemakers in Sierra Leone had not played a "dirty game."

Fighting For Democracy written by Christopher S. Parker and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09-06 with History categories.

How military service led black veterans to join the civil rights struggle Fighting for Democracy shows how the experiences of African American soldiers during World War II and the Korean War influenced many of them to challenge white supremacy in the South when they returned home. Focusing on the motivations of individual black veterans, this groundbreaking book explores the relationship between military service and political activism. Christopher Parker draws on unique sources of evidence, including interviews and survey data, to illustrate how and why black servicemen who fought for their country in wartime returned to America prepared to fight for their own equality. Parker discusses the history of African American military service and how the wartime experiences of black veterans inspired them to contest Jim Crow. Black veterans gained courage and confidence by fighting their nation's enemies on the battlefield and racism in the ranks. Viewing their military service as patriotic sacrifice in the defense of democracy, these veterans returned home with the determination and commitment to pursue equality and social reform in the South. Just as they had risked their lives to protect democratic rights while abroad, they risked their lives to demand those same rights on the domestic front. Providing a sophisticated understanding of how war abroad impacts efforts for social change at home, Fighting for Democracy recovers a vital story about black veterans and demonstrates their distinct contributions to the American political landscape.
