THE FIGHTING AMPHIBIANS, The LST of World War II, is a feature film screenplay taken from the novel, A SLOW MOVING TARGET. The script contains many authentic stories about the turmoil and hardships that the Amphibious Fleet endured during beach invasions in World War II. To enhance the military adversities, the story revolves around the personal lives of five young fictitious sailors who, in 1942, enlist in the U.S. Navy to defend their country against the Axis. They come from different parts of America, meet in boot-camp and become life-long buddies. After boot-camp they were transferred to the dreaded and perilous Amphibious Fleet of LSTs (Landing Ship Tank), because the LST is truly a Large Slow Target having the reputation of a brief life and a sitting duck during an invasion. In this screenplay each principle character presents his/her own unique and unusual experiences. The main character is Johnny Maroni, who attempts to keep the group together and preserve their friendship throughout the war. They call themselves The Five Amphibians. The Five Amphibians are later split-up and are transferred to different LSTs which compelled them to fight in separate campaigns in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters. They communicate through Johnnys sister, Angela, who rewrites their letters to the different Amphibians. Throughout the war only one Amphibian is killed in action.

At 17, Thomas Howard, an Irish kid from the streets of San Francisco's Mission District joined the United States Navy at the height of World War Two. He went through the rigors of Navy Boot Camp, trained on Diesel engines, and was assigned to the engine room of one of the Navy's newest vessels, the LSM (Landing Ship Medium.) This is his story and the story of the thousands of young men who went to war in 1944. Prepared to land on hostile beaches and deliver Marines in the face of the enemy, these Sailors took pride in being known as Fighting Amphibians.' Using original deck logs and archive documents, this is the story of LSM 250 and the men who made her an effective fighting ship.

This is a book for all readers who want to learn about amphibians, the animal group that includes frogs, toads, salamanders, and caecilians. It draws on many years of classroom teaching, laboratory experience, and field observation by the authors. Robert Stebbins and Nathan Cohen lead readers on a fascinating odyssey as they explore some of nature's most interesting creatures, interspersing their own observations throughout the book. A Natural History of Amphibians can serve as a textbook for students and independent learners, as an overview of the field for professional scientists and land managers, and as an engaging introduction for general readers. The class Amphibia contains more than 4,500 known living species. New species are being discovered so rapidly that the number may grow to more than 5,000 during our lifetimes. However, their numbers are being rapidly decimated around the globe, largely due to the encroachment of humans on amphibian habitats and from growing human-caused environmental pollution, discussed at length in the final chapter. The authors focus our attention on the "natural history" of amphibians worldwide and emphasize their interactions with their environments over time: where they live; how they reproduce; how they have been affected by evolutionary processes; what factors will determine their destinies over time. Through the experienced eyes of the authors, who are skilled observers, we come to see and understand the place of amphibians in the natural world around us.
