Excerpt from Our Fighting Services and How They Made the Empire The Duke of Wellington, commander-in-chief, realising that the House of Commons would, as it had always done, on the conclusion of Peace, disband the Army, prepared to face that eventuality. He recognised that the Auxiliary Departments, which he had organised, and perfected be tween 1810 and 1814, must be the first to disappear, and he designedly scattered the Three Arms by small detached units, in secluded barracks, to save them from extinction at the hands of Parliamentary Economists; he tried to preserve a small army by hiding it. Excerpt from The Eagle of the Empire: A Story of Waterloo The Battle of Waterloo, which was fought just one hundred years ago and with which the story in this book ends, is popularly regarded as one of the decisive battles of the world, particularly with ref erence to the career of the greatest of all Captains. Personally some study has led me to believe that Bautzen was really the decisive battle of the Napo leonio wars. If the Emperor had there won the overwhelming victory to which his combinations and the fortunes of war entitled him he would still have retained his Empire. Whether he would have been satisfied or not is another question; and anyway as I am practically alone among students and critics in my opinions about Bautzen they can be dismissed. And that he lost that battle was his own fault any way! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Commerce and the Empire After working many years for Free Trade in Australia I feel emboldened to make an effort in the wider field of the Empire. The time has arrived when, in my judgment, Free Traders in all the self-governing Colonies should make an effort to bring their respective parts of the Empire into line with British fiscal policy. The task is by no means so difficult as some people think; race sympathy is making it easier every year; and the very need of revenue makes the task less instead of more difficult, since it is easier to obtain revenue without than it is with restriction. The necessity of dealing with the preferential phase of the subject has caused me to hurry the publishing, and consequently the book is less complete in many respects than I intended. The controversy with regard to preferential duties will have one good result: it will lead to a better general knowledge of the whole subject, and will, therefore, pave the way for the Self-Governing Colonies, one after another, to raise the Free Trade flag. A British Free Trade Empire is a noble object for which to fight. During a period of about nine months, in 1900-1901, immediately preceding the first Federal Election in the Australian Commonwealth, I published a weekly paper, under the title of Our Country, dealing solely with the fiscal controversy. Excerpt from Why Britain Went to War: To the Boys and Girls of the British Empire For this is a fight for freedom -our own freedom and the freedom of the world - and we still sing Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. We always fought agalnst Powers that wished to master Europe; we fought against Spain, we fought against Louis XIV., and we always won. We fight against the German Emperor now as our forefathers fought against Napoleon, who was a very much greater man. We fight against the Kaiser because he seeks to enslave the world to Germany, as Napoleon tried to enslave the world to France. Excerpt from Champions of the Fleet: Captains and Men-of-War, and Days That Helped to Make the Empire Waters. At the same time, they may claim present-day associations that should render them not out of place just now. How and Why, for instance, the world-famous name Dreadnought came into the Royal Navy is a story of interest on its own account that ought to be timely. With that also is told something of what our Dreadnoughts of old did under fire in the fighting days of history: with Drake; against the Armada; with Sir Walter Raleigh; against De Ruyter and the Dutchmen; at La Hogue; how one gave the sobrz'quet Old Dreadnought to the famous Boscawen; how Nel son's uncle and patron Maurice Suckling captained the same ship in battle; of Collingwood in the Dreadnought; and of the Dreadnought at Trafalgar. We get, too, a passing glance at certain of the points of our mighty battleship the Dread nought of the present hour. Again, in the year that has seen the name of Clive recalled to the memory of his countrymen by an ex-viceroy of.
