Discover the satisfaction of becoming the man God created you to be. In a world that’s grown increasingly confused about--and hostile toward--the very notion of masculinity, authors Jefferson Bethke and Jon Tyson send a powerful call to men everywhere: it's time to step into the light of Jesus' vision for you as a man. There's a shadow that's settled over the hearts of men today. Masculinity is in crisis. Critiques about the dangers of toxic masculinity and the abuses of patriarchal systems have grown louder than ever. The very notions of masculinity and manhood are under attack. In response to cultural shifts, some have doubled down on old stereotypes in ways that just add to the conflict and confusion. The result? Many men simply feel paralyzed--worried about saying the wrong thing, unsure what to do with their ambitions or strengths, simultaneously tempted and shamed by a hypersexualized and pornified culture. Our models and mentors have failed us. Based on their years of working in men's ministry, Bethke and Tyson have good news for men looking for clarity and courage in this age of quiet desperation. In Fighting Shadows, they help men overcome the temptations of escapism, passivity, or overcompensation; combat the most harmful shadows that men battle today, including loneliness, apathy, distraction, lust, and shame; and embrace masculinity as a God-given gift, not a curse to be avoided, suppressed, or battled. An entire generation of men is being told they should abdicate the responsibility and joy of living into God's calling on their lives—don't be one of them. If you're a man who's wondering what to do with your strength, your longings, and your gifts, it's time to step out of the shadows. Jesus has a vision for you.

I come from a family of fighters. I always thought I'd follow in their shadows, becoming unstoppable in the ring. That changed the day I saved the life of a woman I loved, but could never have. My brother hailed me as a hero, and my reward was a wheelchair. Paralyzed, my life became an inescapable nightmare. Until I met her. Ash Mabie had a heart-stopping smile and a laugh that numbed the rage and resentment brewing inside of me. She showed me that even the darkest night still had stars, and it didn't matter one bit that you had to lie in the weeds to see them. I was a jaded asshole who fell for a girl with a knack for running away. I couldn't even walk but I would have spent a lifetime chasing her. Now, I'm on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life. Fighting the shadows of our past. Fighting to reclaim my future. Fighting for her.

Jonas Slowman knew that better than anyone. He'd left the Navajo Nation to fight overseas as a top-level ranger in the military. His devotion to his heritage brought him back to the reservation, back to the Brotherhood. But they handed him his toughest mission yet. "Protect her at all costs," was the order from the tribe. That Jonas would do with his life. Except his attraction to Emily Atkins was a liability. She'd grown into a confident woman who now found herself the target of an implacable enemy, someone who was using her to get to the Navajo. Jonas was good at what he did, but he'd need his sharpest edge against a formidable foe. Because he couldn't risk the consequences to the sacred Brotherhood…or to the woman who'd stealthily claimed his heart.

""Underground Fighting"" explores the hidden world of unsanctioned fight clubs and extreme martial arts, examining their reality against the often sensationalized depictions in manga. The book delves into the motivations and risks involved in these underground arenas, offering insights into why individuals participate in such high-stakes activities. It highlights the ethical considerations surrounding these events, especially regarding society's simultaneous condemnation and consumption of violent narratives. The book traces the historical evolution of combat sports and analyzes societal factors influencing the emergence of underground fighting, like economic disparities and the allure of unregulated competition. It argues that manga's romanticized image obscures a more complex reality, deconstructing myths through the lived experiences of fighters and organizers. The approach is balanced and analytical, using journalistic investigations, interviews, and academic studies to support its claims. Organized into three parts, the book begins by defining underground fighting and its ethical questions. Subsequent chapters explore its history, analyze the psychology of participants, and deconstruct manga portrayals. The book then synthesizes these findings, addressing the central argument about the distortion of reality and offering a more holistic understanding of this subculture.

In the jade-roofed capital of Dadu, 1281, an ominous dread permeates the air. Whispers of sabotage and conspiracy slither through the bustling marketplaces, threatening Kublai Khan's Pax Mongolica. Akhmed, a seasoned Mongol warrior haunted by his family's tragic past, stands as the Khan's unwavering protector. Driven by unyielding loyalty, he plunges into the labyrinth of treachery, each uncovered clue painting a chilling mosaic of a plot far more intricate than mere dissent. The enigmatic Iron Dagger, shrouded in secrecy, orchestrates the empire's unraveling, their motives a terrifying enigma. Akhmed's investigation leads him to the city's shadowed underbelly, where he encounters Nadira, a Persian spy burning with vengeance for her family's murder. Bound by a shared thirst for retribution, they forge a fragile alliance, their paths intertwined in a desperate quest for truth. Together, they navigate Dadu's serpentine alleys and opulent palaces, unveiling a conspiracy entwined with ancient prophecies and forbidden shamanistic rituals. Suspicion falls upon a cast of compelling characters: the disgraced General Cassandra Moran, consumed by bitterness; the ruthless warlord Cody Glover, lusting for power; and the enigmatic shaman Altan Tungalag, whose pronouncements foretell the empire's doom. Their pursuit reveals the Iron Dagger's true objective: to awaken the Black Dragon, a mythical entity of immense power slumbering beneath the Gobi Desert. The Dagger believes this awakening will usher in an era of unparalleled Mongol dominance, unaware of the catastrophic consequences. As Kublai Khan embarks on a grand hunt, oblivious to the looming danger, Akhmed realizes the hunt is the perfect opportunity for the Iron Dagger to strike. Torn between loyalty and suspicion, he confides in Bolormaa, the Khan's astute advisor, setting in motion a race against time to expose the traitors and avert the empire's demise. Their perilous journey takes them across treacherous landscapes, pursued by relentless assassins. A fierce battle erupts during the hunt, testing the Khan's legendary prowess and pushing Akhmed to his limits. Meanwhile, betrayal ignites within Dadu's walls, plunging the city into a bloody civil war. Akhmed and Nadira uncover the Iron Dagger's final ritual site, a hidden temple where the true nature of the Black Dragon – a force of both creation and destruction – is revealed. In a climactic confrontation, Akhmed faces his ultimate test, battling not only for the Khan's life but for the very soul of the Mongol Empire. Amidst the chaos, alliances shift, betrayals are exposed, and the characters must confront the consequences of their choices. The fate of the empire hangs in the balance, resting on the shoulders of a warrior haunted by his past, a spy fueled by vengeance, and a shaman burdened by prophecy. "The Khan's Shadow" is a gripping tale of loyalty, betrayal, and the struggle for power in the heart of the Mongol Empire.

Cancer: 100 Ways to Fight Your own attitude is your brightest guiding star. Some of success is doing what you like to do. But, more of it is doing the things you don’t like to do, but must. It is too easy to make an excuse, and not do it, and fail. –John Roberts As this book goes to press early in 2010, I am 75 and into my fifth year with incurable metastatic prostate cancer, which had already spread to the bones before cancer was diagnosed and the prostate removed. The statistical prognosis for the current treatments of choice is that one-half of these patients will die within three years, 75% within five. This usually happens after the standard treatments and chemotherapy fail and must be discontinued due to harmful side effects or weakening effectiveness, resumed cancer growth, and the failure of bones or key organs. I am still feeling fine, no pain, living a normal life, and I have completed eight months of chemotherapy with a 63% drop in my PSA (prostate cancer blood test) without major side affects or rising PSA. I have fought this cancer and its personal consequences in more than a hundred ways as described here. Above all, a lifetime of fitness, and my current excellent physical and mental condition, supplemented by great medical care and everything else I can learn or think of, is partially responsible for my success in living beyond the average life span for my particular fatal disease. We cannot know which weapon or how much each one contributes to the extension of life, so we must use them all. The doctors all say that cancer survival is very unpredictable, and I figured that many of the positive outcomes must depend on how comprehensively and how hard the individual fights. So, I immediately started this book and organized my fight. I was extremely unfortunate: most prostate cancer either is so slow growing, or eliminated by removal, that survivors live for many years. In my case, it had already spread, or metastasized, to the bones prior to the operation, and that cancer is inoperable and incurable. But, some people in that condition die very early, while others, like me, live much longer. This is highly unpredictable in individual cases due to variation in patient condition, treatment effectiveness, and other unknowns. More than half of all people newly diagnosed with cancer will be cured or given extended remission. They will die of something else. Of the other half, a large number have treatable cancer and they still have many years to live. The remainder, probably including me, have learned that they have incurable cancer that has grown too strong or spread and taken root in such places that it cannot be killed or removed and death is likely in the next few months or years. Nevertheless, normally incurable cancer and conventional predictability sometimes fail, and others may prolong life by fighting with strong mental and physical effort. As the disease progresses and is treated, and science advances, sometimes in great leaps, we are rarely sure of which group we are in. That uncertainty, that hope, and the dreadful power of cancer, call for great strength of character and effort in both patients and those around them. This book is about that. The animal instinct to survive is, in humans alone, expanded in our unique cortex to something much greater––the intelligent understanding of self-awareness and an intense desire to prolong the experience, growth, and emotion of life. The human spirit, beyond the mere motivation of existence, is largely responsible for all that our species has conquered and achieved. It is an essential quality to be trained, treasured, and put to use, and one of the finest ways is to survive, continue, and improve our exceptional life through our collective and individual intellect. In the last century, medical science, the visibility of living in distant years, and the recognition that we are, and can be, responsible for increasing our own longevity have ad

To make matters worse, the stealer of my dead mother's magic has set his sights on my sister a second time. As the child's powers fade, so does her vitality until death looms on the horizon. Can I learn to harness the power of the pack --- and squash my individuality --- before my sister's life is entirely sucked away from her?
