Excerpt from Breakout and Pursuit The campaign in the summer of 1944 related in this volume included some of the most spectacular ground action of the u.s. Army during World War II. It began with the slow and costly hedgerow fighting against deter mined German efforts to contain the Normandy beachhead; it entered its decisive stage when the breach of German defenses permitted full exploita tion of the power and mobility of u.s. Army ground tr00ps; and it reached the peak of brilliance with successive envelopments of principal German forces and the pursuit of their remnants north and east to free most of France, part of Belgium, and portions of the Netherlands. By late August the war in the west appeared to be almost over, but the tyranny of logistics gave the enemy time to rally at the fortified West \vall and delay surrender for another eight months. In the European Theater subseries the backdrop for this volume is Cross Channel Attack, which carries the story to 1 July. Breakout and Pursuit follows the u.s. First Army through 10 September (where The Siegfried Line Campaign picks up the narrative), and the u.s. Third Army through 31 August (where The Lorraine Campaign begins). The logistical factors that played so large a part in governing the pace and extent of combat operations are described in much greater detail in Volume I of Logistical Support of the Armies. The tremendous scope of this campaign, and its partially improvised character, have left a heritage of controversies to which no final answers can be given. As US First Army fought its way south, on the eastern edges of the bridgehead, British and Canadian forces were fighting a war of attrition around Caen facing the bulk of the German armor as division after division was fed into Normandy. Like a pressure cooker, the fighting intensified until, seven weeks after D-Day, Operation 'Cobra' broke the German line. Quickly Patton's Third Army, operational from 1 August, flooded through the gap exploiting the German confusion, encircling what was left of the German armies in the Falaise Pocket and advancing quickly through into Brittany. Three weeks later, the Battle of Normandy was over, the routed German Army--without most of its heavy weapons left in the Falaise Pocket or on the banks of the Seine--was retreating helter skelter back towards Germany and the Low Countries pursued by the Allies in a reverse of the 1940 Blitzkrieg campaign. The three months of war in June-July 1944 were brutal, with losses of front-line troops as heavy as in World War I. The German defense was tenacious, particularly in face of Allied air supremacy. The Allies struggled to get into a position to allow their more mobile forces room for maneuver and and the fighting was ferocious. When victory came, it came at a cost: 209,672 casualties among the ground forces, including 36,976 killed and 19,221 missing. The Allied air forces lost 16,714 airmen. The corresponding German losses were even more significant: some 450,000 men, of whom 240,000 were killed or wounded. More important to the Germans were the losses of heavy equipment--tanks, assault guns, artillery, personnel carriers. As an example, 12th SS Panzer Division had lost 94% of its armor, nearly all of its artillery and 70% of its vehicles. With c20,000 men and 150 tanks before the campaign, after Falaise it had 300 men and 10 tanks. Prison seems like a place for bad people, but throughout all the wars of our history, good men went to prison. They went to prison because they were fighting for something greater than themselves. The trail can seem hopeless as we trudge along being paid barely enough to keep your head above water, and never doing the things you've always dreamed about. We like to talk about those people on news like they just stumbled onto this success. We look at them and wish success would grab us up, and help us across the finish line. But what's the reality, what really takes place in these successful people's lives. Are they born with something inside them that you weren't born with? Did they have a special talent, or skill which was given to them, or they already possessed? It's tough to feel like one person has what it takes to succeed and still others feel so incapable of success. Some people feel smart, but don't feel like they can interact with people. Some feel like they are great with people, but in the mind they feel dumb. I've seen people who looked like a success on the outside, but inside were struggling with haunting fears like; "What if people find out I didn't finish school." When you think about it, nobody has everything they need to succeed. There will always be skills which have to be acquired, relationships that have to be made or mended, tools, resources, and obstacles to overcome. Instead of saying something cliche like, "You can do it!" I'd rather share with you real things you can do, to become a success. I want to give you tools to work on your greatest tool; your mind. Designed to show you how to motivate yourself, this book uses stories, and steps in a way that works. I have to warn you. Learning this information can do crazy things to your life. Once you know this information, you go from asleep, to awake. Then just like Spiderman, "With great power comes great responsibility."
