«Essendo fidanzata con un prigioniero di guerra tedesco ed avendo ad oggi una bambina, faccio appello a codesto Comando di voler concedere l'autorizzazione onde poterci unire in matrimonio, sebbene prigioniero.» Rimasta sola a crescere la figlia nata dall'amore con un soldato tedesco, Lola Oldrini così scriveva alla Commissione alleata di controllo di Roma nel luglio del 1946. Come lei, nel periodo dell'Asse Roma-Berlino, e poi durante l'occupazione nazista, tra il 1943 e il 1945, molte donne italiane intrattennero relazioni sentimentali con militari tedeschi della Wehrmacht. Furono fidanzamenti voluti dalle famiglie d'origine, relazioni di lungo periodo sfociate in 'matrimoni misti', oppure relazioni extraconiugali e incontri fugaci ricercati per bisogno d'affetto e protezione nei giorni della solitudine della guerra. Ciò che è stato omesso è che i bambini nati da questi incontri, considerati 'figli del nemico', furono spesso oggetto di discriminazione, subirono l'abbandono delle madri, passarono l'infanzia chiusi in orfanotrofi, negli istituti di cura religiosi o nei brefotrofi gestiti dalla Croce Rossa o dall'Opera nazionale maternità e infanzia o vennero dati in adozione. Attraverso le lettere private e i diari oggi conservati nell'Archivio Segreto Vaticano e nell'Archivio delle Nazioni Unite, Michela Ponzani racconta le loro vite dimenticate, insieme a quelle delle loro madri, dei loro padri e di chi se ne prese cura, riportando alla luce storie sconosciute e sorprendenti.

The Allied Operation Mallory Major (northern Italy, July 1944) aimed at the destruction of all bridges across the Po River and its tributaries and at isolating the enemy in the northern Apennine mountains (the Gothic Line). The Allied Air Forces could count on the ground support of the guerrillas from the Great Partisan Pocket (in the Apennines south of Piacenza) and were opposed by the Flak. This army was led by aging German officers and NCOs leading young non-German women and men in Wehrmacht service: the Czech guards (Regierungstruppe), and the Italian, Slovak, Polish and former Soviet gunners (the Wehrmacht had transferred its German young men to front line units). Yet, this improbable Flak force proved to be effective and supported by Luftwaffe aircraft (outnumbered by at least 10 to 1) it faced both a hailstorm of Allied bombs and guerrilla ground attacks. Women played a major role in this campaign. Axis, guerrillas, and Allied intelligence used women to infiltrate the enemy and as auxiliaries, nurses and fighters. Another aspect of this battle was the Hitler-Beneš confrontation, an intelligence-guerrilla war which took place within the ranks of the Regierungstruppe.

During the 20th century, medico-technical advances such as the invention of the latex condom (1930), the arrival of the contraceptive pill on the free market (1960/61) and the birth of the first child conceived by in vitro fertilization (1978) contributed to the fact that in Europe and the USA, the planning, conceiving and making of children was increasingly perceived as a matter of individual and collective decision-making. Especially since mid-century, these societies underwent profound political, economic and cultural evolutions. In the realm of human reproduction the relationship between the possible, the desirable, and the permitted had to be continually renegotiated. This volume examines in nine chapters how thinking, speaking and acting changed with regards to reproduction and family planning throughout the modern and post-modern period. Applying an international comparative perspective, the study specifically focuses on the role of value changes underlying these transformation processes.
