Educatore ed “educando” instaurano fra loro una relazione. La natura di questa relazione è spesso in continua trasformazione, ogni giorno, ogni singola attività proposta dall’educatore può mutare il rapporto in qualcosa che avvicina o allontana i due. La difficoltà che deve affrontare un bravo educatore è proprio quella di vincere una possibile resistenza da parte dell’utente; instaurare una relazione, grazie alla sua empatia, che faccia sentire l’ ”educando” pensato e sognato, ascoltato nei suoi desideri e nelle sue paure. Spesso il ruolo dell’educatore è sottovalutato poiché l’utente stesso, inizialmente, concentra le sue attenzioni verso la figura dello psichiatra o dello psicologo. Figure che, a differenza di quella dell’educatore, si caratterizzano con una relazione a tu per tu ed in un luogo “isolato” rispetto agli ambiti sociali in cui l’utente vive. L’educatore invece si cimenta in ambienti e modalità differenti: il suo compito è quello di facilitare relazioni sociali fra i vari utenti, conoscere ed interagire con l’ambiente sociale in cui essi vivono (famiglia, contesto lavorativo ed altro) e, attraverso differenti iniziative, promuovere la crescita dell’individuo e la sua capacità di autonomia realizzando un processo che porta l’utente a prendere coscienza di sé e delle sue risorse.
