Esprimere gratitudine, avanzare una supplica, dimostrare la propria fede, chiedere favori, in un ventaglio inesauribile di circostanze e occasioni. Per il compleanno e l'onomastico del Duce; con la richiesta di un incontro; dopo che aveva pronunciato un discorso importante; quando un membro della sua famiglia era malato, o si voleva che facesse da padrino a un figlio; in occasione degli anniversari del fascismo o di una crisi internazionale; perfino quando lo scrivente aveva fatto un sogno significativo. Durante il ventennio migliaia di italiani impugnarono la penna per scrivere al loro capo carismatico. I mittenti erano di tutte le estrazioni sociali ed età. Erano soldati, contadini, massaie, bambini, preti, studenti, artigiani. Molti scrivevano per chiedere un aiuto economico, ma in moltissimi per esprimere al loro leader ammirazione incondizionata, fino al desiderio amoroso o all'adorazione religiosa: per tanti il culto del Duce non fu soltanto il prodotto della propaganda ma un attaccamento profondamente sentito. Benito Mussolini (July 29th, 1883-April 28th, 1945), Il Duce of Italian Fascism and the Prime Minister of Italy from 1922 to 1943, is a man of undeniable historical impact. This arrangement of his early political speeches begins in November 1914, after Mussolini is expelled from the Italian Socialist Party for advocating Italian intervention in the First World War. The speeches continue throughout the Great War, as Mussolini joins the fighting ranks of his countrymen, and advance through his political development, the creation of Italian Fascism, and the founding and rise to power of the National Fascist Party, which ruled Italy from 1922 to 1943. Originally published in 1923, Mussolini as Revealed in His Political Speeches was selected, translated, and edited by Baron Bernardo Quaranta di San Severino, who also introduces the collection and each speech with a brief overview of context. The speeches are arranged mostly chronologically, with Severino dividing his speeches into categories with overlapping timelines in the post-war period. This presentation represents the different aspects and focuses of Mussolini's speeches more clearly, whether regarding labor, the people, or policy. Benito Mussolini used architecture to educate the masses, exploiting its symbolic prowess as a powerful tool for achieving political consensus. Mussolini, Architect examines Mussolini in Italy from 1922 to 1943 and expands the traditional interpretations of fascism, advancing the claim that Mussolini devised and implemented architecture as a tool capable of determining public behaviour and influencing opinion. This book compares the Italian Fascist and the Spanish Falangist political cultures from the early 1930s to the early 1940s, using the idea of the nation as the focus of the comparison. It argues that the discourse on the nation represented a common denominator between these two manifestations of the fascist phenomenon in Mussolini’s Italy and Franco’s Spain. Exploring the similarities and differences between these two political cultures, this study investigates how Fascist and Falangist ideologues defined and developed their own idea of the nation over time to legitimise their power within their respective countries. It examines to what extent their concept of the nation influenced Italian and Spanish domestic and foreign policies. The book offers a four-level framework for understanding the evolution of the fascist idea of the nation: the ideology of the nation, the imperial projects of Fascism and Falangism, race and the nation, and the place of these cultures in the new Nazi continental order. In doing so, it shows how these ideas of the nation had significant repercussions on fascist political practice.

Since the 1920s, an endless flow of studies has analyzed the political systems of fascism, theseizure of power, the nature of the regimes, the atrocities committed, and, finally, the wars waged against other countries. However, much less attention has been paid to the strategies of persuasion employed by the regimes to win over the masses for their cause. Among these, fascist propaganda has traditionally been seen as the key means of influencing public opinion. Only recently has the "fascination with Fascism" become a topic of enquiry that has also formed the guiding interest of this volume: it offers, for the first time, a comparative analysis of the forms and functions of theater in countries governed by fascist or para-fascist regimes. By examining a wide spectrum of theatrical manifestations in a number of States with a varying degree of fascistization, these studies establish some of the similarities and differences between the theatrical cultures of several cultures in the interwar period.
