“Rich, imaginative. . . . One of the best novels I’ve read all year.”—Ross King, author of Leonardo and the Last Supper A sensuous, heartbreaking novel about art, beauty, and the choices we make that define us for life. In 1968 a young man travels to Paris, where a series of unlikely events takes him to a tiny village in Italy—and to the one great love of his life. A marble merchant meets a couple on their honeymoon, introducing them to the sensual beauty of Carrara. An Italian woman arrives in Canada to find the father she never knew. A terrible accident in a marble quarry changes the course of a young boy’s life and, ultimately, sets in motion each of these stories, which David Macfarlane masterfully shapes into a magnificent whole. “A beautifully written, complex, and bittersweet story that spans continents and eras.”—Daphne Kalotay, author of Russian Winter and Sight Reading

A sensuous, heartbreaking novel about art, beauty and the choices we make that define us for life, from the author of the Giller Prize finalist Summer Gone. A young man travels to Paris in 1968, where a series of unlikely events take him to a tiny village in Italy-and the one great love of his life. A marble merchant meets a couple on their honeymoon, introducing them to the sensual beauty of Carrara. An Italian woman arrives in Canada to find the father she never knew. A terrible accident in a marble quarry changes the course of a young boy's life and, ultimately, sets in motion each of these stories, which Macfarlane masterfully shapes into a magnificent whole. Oliver Hughson falls in love with wild, bohemian Anna over the course of one glorious summer in Italy. Bound by a sense of responsibility to his adoptive parents back home in Canada, however, he leaves her, an act he will regret for the rest of his life. Narrated by the daughter he never knew he had, The Figures of Beauty is a love story of mythic proportions. Through luck, fate and great good fortune, Oliver found the one place and the one woman he should never have left. This is the story of him trying to find his way back.

First edition (1851) and the rarest of Hay's books. The Scot David Ramsay Hay (1798-1866) is best known through his many books on colour theory. He was a successful house decorator, counting Sir Walter Scott and Queen Victoria amongst his clients. Here he tackles with much gusto and energy the age old problem of proportion. His system of proportion is based upon the harmonic ratios of the diatonic scale: 'the eye is influenced, in its estimations of spaces, by a simplicity of proportions similar to that which guides the ear in its appreciation of sounds'. 'The basis of the present theory, therefore, simply is, that a figure is pleasing to the eye in the same degree as its fundamental angles bear to each other the same proportions that the vibrations bear to one another in the common chord of music'. The plates are 'representing geometric constructions and illustrations of the male and female skeletons, and muscle manikins, with the lines of proportion, after Hay's system. They are all drawn by the author and beautifully engraved by W. Forrest.

Values Of Beauty written by Paul Guyer and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-06-13 with Philosophy categories.

Values of Beauty discusses major ideas and figures in the history of aesthetics from the beginning of the eighteenth century to the end of the twentieth century. The core of the book features Paul Guyer's essays on the epochal contribution of Immauel Kant, and sets Kant's work in the context of predecessors, contemporaries, and successors including David Hume, Alexander Gerard, Archibald Alison, Arthur Schopenhauer, and John Stuart Mill All of the essays emphasize the complexity rather than isolation of our aesthetic experience of both nature and art; and the interconnection of aesthetic values such as beauty and sublimity on the one hand, and prudential and moral values on the other. Guyer emphasizes that the idea of the freedom of the imagination as the key to both artistic creation and aesthetic experience has been a common thread throughout the modern history of aesthetics, although the freedom of the imagination has been understood and connected to other forms of freedom in a variety of ways.
