Figures of Chance II: Chance in Theory and Practice proposes a multidisciplinary analysis of cultural phenomena related to notions of chance and contingency. Alongside its transhistorical companion volume (Figures of Chance I), it considers how the projective and predictive capacity of societies is shaped by representations and cultural models of a reality that is understood, by varying degrees, to be contingent, unpredictable, or chaotic. This volume reevaluates the role played by figurative representations of chance in contemporary discourses about chance and contingency. Written by seven interdisciplinary teams, and encompassing philosophy, literature, history of science, sociology, mathematics, cognitive science, information science, and art history, this text puts scientific conceptions of chance into dialogue with their contemporary literary and artistic representations. It thus brings out the central role played by art in the human perception of chance, and in our methods for projecting the future, in order to better understand contemporary human attitudes in the face of risk.

Figures of Chance I: Chance in Literature and the Arts (16th–21st Centuries) proposes a transhistorical analysis that will serve as a reference work on the evolution of literary and artistic representations of chance and contingency. Alongside its multidisciplinary companion volume (Figures of Chance II), it considers how the projective and predictive capacity of societies is shaped by representations and cultural models of a reality that is understood, to varying degrees, to be contingent, unpredictable, or chaotic. Giving special emphasis to the French context while also developing broad cross-cultural comparisons, this volume examines the dialogue between evolving conceptions and changing representations of chance, from Renaissance figures of Fortune to the data-driven world of the present. Written by recognized specialists of each of the periods studied, it identifies and historicizes the main fictional and factual modes of portraying, narrating, and comprehending chance in the West.

Written by one of the top most statisticians with experience in diverse fields of applications of statistics, the book deals with the philosophical and methodological aspects of information technology, collection and analysis of data to provide insight into a problem, whether it is scientific research, policy making by government or decision making in our daily lives. The author dispels the doubts that chance is an expression of our ignorance which makes accurate prediction impossible and illustrates how our thinking has changed with quantification of uncertainty by showing that chance is no longer the obstructor but a way of expressing our knowledge. Indeed, chance can create and help in the investigation of truth. It is eloquently demonstrated with numerous examples of applications that statistics is the science, technology and art of extracting information from data and is based on a study of the laws of chance. It is highlighted how statistical ideas played a vital role in scientific and other investigations even before statistics was recognized as a separate discipline and how statistics is now evolving as a versatile, powerful and inevitable tool in diverse fields of human endeavor such as literature, legal matters, industry, archaeology and medicine.Use of statistics to the layman in improving the quality of life through wise decision making is emphasized.

Fuzzy systems and data mining are now an essential part of information technology and data management, with applications affecting every imaginable aspect of our daily lives. This book contains 81 selected papers from those accepted and presented at the 2nd international conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining (FSDM2016), held in Macau, China, in December 2016. This annual conference focuses on 4 main groups of topics: fuzzy theory, algorithm and system; fuzzy applications; the interdisciplinary field of fuzzy logic and data mining; and data mining, and the event provided a forum where more than 100 qualified, high-level researchers and experts from over 20 countries, including 4 keynote speakers, gathered to create an important platform for researchers and engineers worldwide to engage in academic communication. All the papers collected here present original ideas, methods and results of general significance supported by clear reasoning and compelling evidence, and as such the book represents a valuable and wide ranging reference resource of interest to all those whose work involves fuzzy systems and data mining.

Statistics for Psychology is an interactive, highly visual, and accessible guide to the statistical practices you will encounter as a psychology student. Its software-agnostic approach keeps the focus on the core principles, rather than getting bogged down in complicated formulae and jargon. This book is based on the authors′ BPS commended programme. It focusses on providing the strong foundational understanding you’ll need to use statistics confidently and creatively rather than the software-specific way in which statistics is often taught. This edition includes: new content throughout on being a responsible researcher, a new chapter to support you in presenting your research to a critical audience, carefully designed graphics to explain statistical principles, "your turn" exercises to test your understanding of each chapter. This book is the ideal guide for students approaching statistics and research methods in psychology for the first time. Roger Watt is Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the University of Stirling. Elizabeth Collins is a researcher with a PhD in Psychology.

In this paper we exemplify the types of Plithogenic Probability and respectively Plithogenic Statistics. Several applications are given. The Plithogenic Probability of an event to occur is composed from the chances that the event occurs with respect to all random variables (parameters) that determine it. Each such a variable is described by a Probability Distribution (Density) Function, which may be a classical, (T,I,F)-neutrosophic, I-neutrosophic, (T,F)-intuitionistic fuzzy, (T,N,F)-picture fuzzy, (T,N,F)-spherical fuzzy, or (other fuzzy extension) distribution function. The Plithogenic Probability is a generalization of the classical MultiVariate Probability. The analysis of the events described by the plithogenic probability is the Plithogenic Statistics.
