Allah SWT menurunkan syariat Islam sejatinya untuk menciptakan kehidupan yang baik bagi seluruh umat manusia tanpa kecuali. Dengan kata lain, syariat-Nya adalah rahmat bagi alam semesta (rahmatan lil ‘alamin). Wujudnya, hidup sejahtera (lahum ajruhum ‘inda rabbihim), damai (wa la khaufun ‘alaihim) dan bahagia (wa la hum yahzanun). Karena itu, seluruh pemikiran, pandangan, pola pikir serta tata aturan dalam bidang agama, sosial, politik, hukum, ekonomi, budaya, maupun bidang lainnya, semestinya berorientasi pada tujuan untuk menciptakan kehidupan yang penuh rahmat. Perilaku atau praktik keberagamaan yang jauh dari tujuan itu, seperti kekerasan, terorisme, kebencian, dan sejenisnya, tidak hanya menyimpang dari syariat Islam, tetapi juga menjadi parasit yang menghambat dan menghancurkan peradaban. Buku ini mengingatkan sekaligus menegaskan kembali esensi tujuan syariat Islam dengan menelusuri prinsip-prinsip teologis Islam rahmatan lil ‘alamin dari sumber primernya: al-Quran dan Hadis. Prinsip-prinsip fundamental ini—yakni akidah, tauhid, atau ushul ad-din—disebut oleh Imam Abu Hanifah dengan “Fikih Akbar”. Fikih Akbar merupakan pangkal (ushul) dari segala tafsir syariat Islam (furu’) yang berorientasi kepada kehidupan yang baik. Al-Māturīdī (d. 944 CE), the prominent Hanafi scholar from Samarqand, succeeded in formulating a theological doctrine which is widely accepted in Sunni Islam to this day. The present volume which is a revised English translation of the German original published in 1997 examines his teachings by describing their principal characteristics and situating them in the history of kalām. Part one investigates the development of Hanafi thought in Transoxania before Māturīdī's time. Part two deals with the other religious groups (in particular the Mu'tazilites) which emerged in this area during his lifetime. Part three shows how he explained and defended the position of his predecessors; in doing so, he reformed their traditional views, thereby developing his own theology which then became the basis of a new tradition, viz. the Māturīdite school.
