This book brings the history of Latin American philosophy to an English-speaking audience through the prominent voices of Mauricio Beuchot, Horacio Cerutti-Guldberg, María Luisa Femenías, Jorge J. E. Gracia, Oscar R. Martí, León Olivé, Carlos Pereda, and Eduardo Rabossi. They argue that Spanish is not a philosophically irrelevant language and that there are original positions to be found in the work of Latin American philosophers. Resultan indudables los avances experimentados en los últimos cuarenta años en el conocimiento del pasado de nuestras universidades. Hemos asistido, en este período, a una eclosión de publicaciones sobre historia universitaria, con distintas aportaciones en cuanto a teoría, métodos y técnicas historiográficas. Podemos afirmar que, en la actualidad, el investigador cuenta con más medios de trabajo, más referencias y más apoyos institucionales para hacer su oficio. Sin embargo, y a pesar de ello, todavía persisten ciertas carencias o limitaciones en la investigación que impiden que podamos efectuar una reconstrucción lo más completa posible (o «total», según determinados postulados) de la historia de nuestras universidades. De este modo, siguen siendo necesarios los trabajos de síntesis sobre el estado de la cuestión y líneas de investigación de universidades particulares; y hace falta, también, plantear casuísticas y modelos territoriales para amplios conjuntos territoriales, con especial atención al marco hispánico (peninsular, mediterráneo, iberoamericano) estableciendo jerarquías e interacciones. A partir de estos materiales se podría pasar a otros objetivos más ambiciosos, como los estudios comparados o la elaboración de síntesis globales, de los que estamos también necesitados.
