Fillers, Filled Polymers and Polymer Blends Design and synthesis of base materials is the very first step of innovation on materials an processes, followed by the search for synergy by appropriate combinations of these materials under different forms and shapes - films, coatings, foams, Packagings, scaffolds, ... - for a large range of applications including electronics, energy, life sciences and technology, environment, etc. This was the main topic of the first joint meeting 8th European Symposium on Polymer Blends and Eurofillers 2005, organized in Bruges, Belgium, from May 9 to May 12, 2005. This joint meeting showed that problems faced in "filled polymers" and "polymer blends" domains are most often very similar to each other and therefore should deserve attention and discussion from both scientific communities. The present volume covers most of the plenary and oral contributions presented a the meeting.

High-density polyethylene (HDPE), ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and blends thereof are used to produce ternary and quaternary conductive polymer composites (CPCs) containing carbon black (CB), graphite (G), carbon fiber (CF) and selected mixtures thereof to discern if polymer blends and mixed fillers yield appreciable advantages over CPCs composed of single polymers and/or single fillers. The effects of polymer blend composition and filler type, concentration and composition on electrical conductivity, composite morphology, mechanical properties and thermal behavior have been examined and correlated to establish meaningful structure-property relationships that can facilitate the rational design of efficient CPCs. Enhanced conductivity due to double-percolation is observed in ternary CPCs containing CB or G, whereas the concept of bridged double percolation is proposed to explain substantial conductivity increases in quaternary composites.

Polymers are substances containing a large number of structural units joined by the same type of linkage. These substances often form into a chain-like structure. Starch, cellulose, and rubber all possess polymeric properties. Today, the polymer industry has grown to be larger than the aluminium, copper and steel industries combined. Polymers already have a range of applications that far exceeds that of any other class of material available to man. Current applications extend from adhesives, coatings, foams, and packaging materials to textile and industrial fibres, elastomers, and structural plastics. Polymers are also used for most composites, electronic devices, biomedical devices, optical devices, and precursors for many newly developed high-tech ceramics. This book presents leading-edge research in this rapidly-changing and evolving field.

With the increasing recognition of the importance of fillers for reinforcing and enhancing polymer properties, current research is progressing rapidly. This volume of Macromolecular Symposia presents highlights of the Eurofillers'99 conference held in Lyon, France, September 6-9, 1999. Recent research furthering our understanding of the properties and processing of fillers and their interactions with polymers was presented, along with new ideas addressing the need for filled polymers with combinations of varied properties. The possibilities presented by nanotechnology were also introduced through contributions concerning investigations into nanofillers, such as clays and whiskers, and nanocomposites.

This is an overview of particulate filler production and use. Each filler type has different properties and these in turn are influenced by the particle size, shape and surface chemistry. Filler characteristics are discussed from costs to particle morphology. Practical aspects of filler grading are described and the principal filler types are outlined. Filler surface modification is an important topic. The main types of modifying agent and their uses are described, from fatty acids to functionalised polymers. An additional indexed section containing several hundred abstracts from the Rapra Polymer Library database gives useful references for further reading.

The rheology of polymer melts plays an important role today in industry and academia. Although several textbooks on this subject are available, with very few exceptions they cover homogeneous products only. This book is unique in that it focuses on heterogeneous systems such as particle-filled materials and polymer blends, which are highly important in the world market. It deals with similarities and differences of the flow properties of these two classes of material, providing both a fundamental and a practical understanding. Key points of the book are the viscous and elastic properties of engineering polymers filled with functional particles and the influence of nanoparticles on rheological properties. Two key aspects of rheological measurements are discussed: the influence of heterogeneous structures on the flow of materials important for processing and the use of rheological means to get an insight into morphological features. Both approaches are applied to particle-filled melts and to polymer blends. In the latter case it is shown in detail in which way the deformation of droplets formed by the dispersed phase can be affected by outer deformation, particularly in elongation.

Nanofillers can play two important roles in polymer blends. The first is the improvement of various properties such as mechanical, barrier, thermal, flame retardancy, and electrical properties. The second is the modification of miscibility/compatibility and morphology of polymer blends. The mechanism of action of nanoparticles to modify the morphology, interfacial properties, and performance of immiscible polymer blends relies on their localization, their interactions with polymer components, and the way these additives disperse within the polymer blend. The objective of this chapter is to review the research on nanofilled thermoplastic/thermoplastic polymer blends, paying particular attention both to the distribution of nanoparticles inside a binary polymer blend and to the effect of nanofillers on the morphology and on the properties of the thermoplastic polymer blends. In a large majority of cases, thermoplastic polymer blends filled with nanoparticles show better compatibility in terms of morphology size than pure blends. Moreover, the formation of a cocontinuous structure is promoted by the presence of the nanofiller.
