Film is considered by some to be the most dominant art form of the twentieth century. It is many things, but it has become above all a means of telling stories through images and sounds. The stories are often offered to us as quite false, frankly and beautifully fantastic, and they are sometimes insistently said to be true. But they are stories in both cases, and there are very few films, even in avant-garde art, that don't imply or quietly slip into narrative. This story element is important, and is closely connected with the simplest fact about moving pictures: they do move. Even the older meanings of the word 'film' - a membrane, a covering, a veil, an emanation - now seem to have something to do with moving pictures. Many people believe films are an instrument of illusion, an emphatic way of seeing what is not there; and this capacity has been both celebrated and condemned. 'Like a movie' mostly means like some sort of fairy-tale. But what about the reverse proposition: that more than any other invention film brings us close to the world as it actually is? 'Photography is truth', a character says in a film by Jean-Luc Godard. 'And cinema is the truth twenty-four times per second'. The same claim is made every day, albeit less epigrammatically, by newsreels and surveillance cameras. In this Very Short Introduction Michael Wood provides a brief history and examination of the nature of the medium of film, considering its role and impact on society as well as its future in the digital age. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. With this collection of reviews, fans of western movies can enjoy taking another special look at some of our favorites with western author Chuck Lewis as he offers us insight and a unique view of the films we like or even those we don't like. We might remember some of them with a nostalgia that doesn't match up with what the movie was all about. We think we know the stories, or what a good job of acting our heroes did, or perhaps gave no thought to the symbolism of the roles they played, but maybe Chuck can suggest something different. The storylines of these movies are told here in detail and interspersed with appropriate and interesting observations. You will definitely learn while being entertained. Most of these reviews are written with Chuck's subtle sense of humor, but all are informative and surprising at times. They offer interesting facts that never occurred to us when we first saw the movie, but all are honestly assessed with a bite that only Chuck Lewis can give us. -Movies reviewed in Volume One- Shane-Winchester '73-Red River-Conagher-Will Penny-Monte Walsh-The Naked Spur-High Noon-River of No Return-The Unforgiven-The Big Country-Cowboy-Stagecoach-The Wonderful Country-My Darling Clementine-Monte Walsh (TV)-Jeremiah Johnson-The Magnificent Seven-The Wild Bunch-Tombstone-Blood on the Moon-The Searchers-Colorado Territory-The Bravados.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR • Cosmopolitan • Kirkus Reviews • BookPage A page-turning thriller for readers of Stephen King, Gillian Flynn, and Stieg Larsson, Night Film tells the haunting story of a journalist who becomes obsessed with the mysterious death of a troubled prodigy—the daughter of an iconic, reclusive filmmaker. On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashley’s life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordova—a man who hasn’t been seen in public for more than thirty years. For McGrath, another death connected to this seemingly cursed family dynasty seems more than just a coincidence. Though much has been written about Cordova’s dark and unsettling films, very little is known about the man himself. Driven by revenge, curiosity, and a need for the truth, McGrath, with the aid of two strangers, is drawn deeper and deeper into Cordova’s eerie, hypnotic world. The last time he got close to exposing the director, McGrath lost his marriage and his career. This time he might lose even more. Night Film, the gorgeously written, spellbinding new novel by the dazzlingly inventive Marisha Pessl, will hold you in suspense until you turn the final page. Praise for Night Film “Night Film has been precision-engineered to be read at high velocity, and its energy would be the envy of any summer blockbuster. Your average writer of thrillers should lust for Pessl’s deft touch with character.”—Joe Hill, The New York Times Book Review “Mysterious and even a little head-spinning, an amazing act of imagination.”—Dean Baquet, The New York Times Book Review “Maniacally clever . . . Cordova is a monomaniacal genius who creeps into the darkest crevices of the human psyche. . . . As a study of a great mythmaker, Night Film is an absorbing act of myth-making itself. . . . Dastardly fun . . . The plot feels like an M. C. Escher nightmare about Edgar Allan Poe. . . . You’ll miss your subway stop, let dinner burn and start sleeping with the lights on.”—The Washington Post “Haunting . . . a suspenseful, sprawling page-turner.”—USA Today “Entrancing and delightful . . . [a] whipsmart humdinger of a thriller . . . It feels, above all things, new.”—The Boston Globe “Gripping . . . a masterful puzzle . . . Pessl builds up real suspense.”—Entertainment Weekly “A very deeply imagined book . . . sprints to an ending that’s equal parts nagging and haunting: What lingers, beyond all the page-turning, is a density of possible clues that leaves you leafing backward, scanning fictional blog comments and newspaper clippings, positive there’s some secret detail that will snap everything into focus.”—New York “Hypnotic . . . The real and the imaginary, life and art, are dizzyingly distorted not only in a Cordova night film . . . but in Pessl’s own Night Film as well.”—Vanity Fair

""Fake Movie Reviews"" explores the hidden world of film industry manipulation, revealing how studios deceptively influence audience perception to boost box office revenue. The book uncovers tactics like planting reviews and compromising critics, illustrating how manufactured buzz can sway moviegoers into purchasing tickets for underwhelming films. It examines the psychology behind audience susceptibility and the ethical and legal implications for the industry, an industry where a star rating can make or break a movie. The book's unique value lies in its blend of critical analysis and practical guidance. It traces the evolution of film publicity, from traditional press releases to today's online campaigns, further highlighting how the internet and social media have amplified opportunities for deceptive film marketing. Case studies expose specific films and studios engaging in these questionable practices, detailing the impact on audiences and any legal repercussions. Progressing logically, the book begins with core concepts of film marketing and audience perception, then delves into case studies of deceptive tactics, before concluding with potential solutions. These solutions include stricter regulations, improved media literacy, and ethical guidelines for film critics and marketers, empowering readers to become savvy consumers of media and demand greater transparency in the film industry.
