In 1935 Sidney Kingsley's play about streetwise urban kids, Dead End, opened on Broadway featuring 14 adolescent actors. For two years on Broadway and then on tour, Kingsley's play delivered its social commentary contrasting affluent neighborhoods and tenement slums on New York City's East River. The film industry picked up the story and in 1937 released Dead End which spawned 23 more years of films and serials featuring the Dead End Kids and their offshoots, Little Tough Guys, East Side Kids and the Bowery Boys. This chronicle follows the street kids through the many assorted incarnations, shifting casts and studios. First the reader is introduced to how the original play and film came about. A cast list and analysis of each production follows. For the major players, the author provides a biography and filmography, and several of these entries include a tribute from a friend or family member. Brief biographical profiles are given for other actors. Sketches of the "Dead End" revivals of 1978 and 2005 follow.

The evolution of the Bowery Boys has more twists and turns then a boxing match. In 1937, they started out as the Dead End Kids, a group of young hooligans from the slums of New York's East River, appearing in several films for Warner Brothers. A year later, Universal borrowed most of the group and cast them in films and serials, under the names of the Little Tough Guys and the Dead End Kids and the Little Tough Guys. In 1939, the group went to Monogram and became the East Side Kids. Then, in 1946, it happened. The East Side Kids were revamped and The Bowery Boys were born. In time, their films evolved into full comedies, transforming Leo Gorcey (Slip) and Huntz Hall (Sach) into a memorable comedy duo. To celebrate these long-running, popular film groups, "The Bowery Boys, The East Side Kids & The Dead End Kids Movie Poster Art Book" presents poster art--including movie posters, half-sheets, lobby cards, window cards or inserts-- from nearly 50 films starring The Dead End Kids, The Little Tough Guys, The East Side Kids or The Bowery Boys. Poster art is organized by year of release. A revised edition of "The Bowery Boys Movie Poster Book," poster art, in this edition, has been digitally improved for sharper reproductions. This book is intended to be a sample of the poster art used to promote many of the groups' films. It does not contain information about their films nor biographical data about each group nor the actors who were members of them. 50 Pages/Full Color on White paper

Teen Movies written by Timothy Shary and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-31 with Performing Arts categories.

Cinema has always engaged with the experiences, hopes, fears, and anxieties of—and about—adolescents, teenagers, and young people. This book is a comprehensive and accessible history of the depiction of teenagers in American film, from the silent era to the twenty-first century. Timothy Shary explores the development of teenage roles across eras and industrial cycles, such as the juvenile delinquent pictures of the 1950s, the beach movies of the 1960s, the horror films of the 1980s, and the fantasy epics of the 2000s. He considers the varied genres of the teen movie—horror and melodrama, romance and adventure, fantasy and science fiction—and its shifting themes and tropes around sex and gender, childhood and adulthood, rebellion and social order, crime and consumer culture. Teen Movies features analyses of films such as Rebel Without a Cause (1955), Splendor in the Grass (1961), Carrie (1976), The Breakfast Club (1985), American Pie (1999), and the Twilight series (2008–2012). This second edition is updated throughout and features a new chapter examining Millennials and Generation Z on screen, with discussions of many contemporary topics, including queer youth in movies like Moonlight (2016), abortion in films such as Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020), and the flourishing of a “tween” cinema as seen in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. (2023).
