Supone un inmenso trabajo de documentaci�n y rescate de antiguos ritos y supersticiones contemplados a trav�s del cristianismo y sostenidos como reales por su autor. As� despliega todas las mancias habidas y nos muestra la urdimbre y verdadera ra�z de los conocimientos herm�ticos. Una lectura antropol�gica de su obra nos conduce a establecer un antes y un despu�s de la comprensi�n de las paraciencias, no en la Ilustraci�n o en las distintas revoluciones industriales, sino en el propio siglo XX, con la consolidaci�n del Movimiento de la Nueva Era. Adem�s, la obra de Agripa fue de inspiraci�n para autores espa�oles del siglo XX como Cela o Cunqueiro, as� como de todos aquellos escritores que trabajaron el realismo m�gico como g�nero literario. Habida cuenta de que las traducciones que circulan en espa�ol vienen del franc�s, nos hemos permitido trabajar en la presente edici�n, elaborada directamente del texto original en lat�n.

A craze for intricate metaphors, referred to as conceits, permeated all forms of communication in seventeenth-century Italy and Spain, reshaping reality in highly creative ways. The Age of Subtlety: Nature and Rhetorical Conceits in Early Modern Europe situates itself at the crossroads of rhetoric, poetics, and the history of science, analyzing technical writings on conceits by such scholars as Baltasar Gracián, Matteo Peregrini, and Emanuele Tesauro against the background of debates on telescopic and microscopic vision, the generation of living beings, and the boundaries between the natural and the artificial. It contends that in order to understand conceits, we must locate them within the early modern culture of ingenuity that was also responsible for the engineer’s machines, the juggler’s sleight of hand, the wiles of the statesman, and the discovery of truths about nature.
