Finché il nesso segreto che unisce e divide metafisica, matematica e fisica non sarà chiarito, la relazione fra la filosofia e le scienze non cesserà di essere problematica e il sapere dell'Occidente continuerà a essere irreparabilmente scisso. Che cosa è in gioco in quella che la tradizione della filosofia occidentale ha chiamato filosofia prima, ovvero metafisica? Si tratta di una speculazione astratta ormai desueta, oppure in essa ne va di un problema che ci riguarda da vicino, cioè quello dell'unità del sapere dell'Occidente? La metafisica è, infatti, «prima» solo in rapporto alle altre due scienze che Aristotele chiama teoretiche, cioè la fisica e la matematica. È il senso strategico di questo «primato» che si tratta allora di interrogare, poiché in esso è in questione nulla di meno che la relazione di dominio o di sudditanza, di conflitto o di armonia fra la filosofia e le scienze. L'ipotesi del libro è che il tentativo della filosofia di assicurarsi attraverso la metafisica un primato rispetto alle scienze si sia invece risolto alla fine in una sudditanza della filosofia, divenuta piú o meno consapevolmente ancilla scientiarum, com'era stata in passato ancilla theologiae. Tanto piú urgente è indagare, come questo libro fa attraverso un'indagine archeologica sulla metafisica, la natura e i limiti di questo primato e di questa sudditanza.

What is at stake in that form of inquiry that the western philosophical tradition has called “first philosophy” or “metaphysics”? Is it an abstract, now outmoded branch of philosophy, or does it address a problem that is still of great interest – namely the unity of western knowledge? In fact, metaphysics is “first” only in relation to the other two sciences that Aristotle called “theoretical”: the study of nature (phusikē) and mathematics. It is the strategic sense of this “primacy” that needs to be examined, because what is at issue here is nothing less than the relationship – of domination or subservience, conflict or harmony – between philosophy and science. The hypothesis of this book is that philosophy’s attempt to use metaphysics as a way of securing primacy among the sciences has resulted instead in its subservience: philosophy, once handmaiden to theology (ancilla theologiae), has now become more or less consciously handmaiden to the sciences (ancilla scientiarum). So it is all the more urgent to explore the nature and limits of this primacy and subservience, which is what the present book does through an archaeological investigation of metaphysics. This important rereading of the western philosophical tradition by a leading thinker will be of interest to students and scholars in philosophy, critical theory and the humanities more generally, and to anyone interested in contemporary philosophy and European thought.

The book offers a systematic reconstruction of the disagreement between Husserl and Heidegger from the former's point of view, but without falling into any form of Husserlian apologetics. The main thesis is that Husserl's critique of Heidegger's existential analytics as a form of philosophical anthropology entails a deeper fundamental thesis, namely, that Heidegger confuses the subject matter of first philosophy (the transcendental subject) with metaphysics (in the Husserlian sense of the expression). In questo senso essa si rivela essere anzitutto orientamento, in accordo con un bisogno di adattamento e determinazione che accompagna l'essere umano, sempre in cerca della ridefinizione del proprio posto nel mondo. Se già con la crisi dei fondamenti di inizio Novecento la filosofia avvertiva nella sua infondatezza la propria radicale differenza, è soprattutto con l'avvento dell'Antropocene e il riconoscimento dell'essere umano come forza naturale che la filosofia può riscoprire appieno la propria funzione, realizzando come la sua infondatezza - la sua atopia - dipenda dal suo radicamento naturale e dalla sua capacità di prendere la giusta distanza da ogni forma stabile di sapere. È a partire da qui, lungo un percorso critico che attraversa le principali posizioni teoretiche del pensiero occidentale, che questo libro riafferma tutto il potenziale rivoluzionario e ricreativo della filosofia volto alla determinazione di un nuovo possibile orientamento.
