Over het wezen van de menselijke vrijheid is een sleuteltekst in het oeuvre van Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling en een van de hoogtepunten van het Duitse idealisme. Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling (1775-1854) was een Duitse romantische filosoof. Hij was professor in de filosofie in Jena, München en Berlijn, en geldt als een vertegenwoordiger van het Duitse idealisme. Hij was een leerling van Fichte en was bevriend met G.W.F.
