Jika makhluk lain bertahan dan berkembang mengikuti selera alam, tidak halnya dengan manusia, ia bertahan dan berkembang melalui proses pendidikan. Peranan filsafat yang mendasari berbagai aspek pendidikan sudah tentu merupakan sumbangan utama bagi pembinaan pendidikan. Teori-teori yang tersusun karenanya dapat disebut sebagai ilmu kependidikan yang landasannya adalah filsafat pendidikan. Dalam pandangan Islam, filsafat pendidikan dapat diartikan sebagai studi tentang pandangan filosofis dari sistem dan aliran filsafat terhadap masalah-masalah pendidikan sehingga dapat memberikan pengaruh yang lebih baik terhadap pertumbuhan dan perkembangan individu dan umat Islam secara luas.
