Menurut istilah Yunani Filsafat terdiri dari kata philos yang berarti cinta atau sahabat dan kata sophia yang berarti kebijaksanaan, kebijaksanaan atau pengetahuan. Jadi, menurut asal katanya, pengertian filsafat adalah cinta kebijaksanaan atau love of truth, dalam hal ini kebenaran ilmu pengetahuan. Kata filsafat berasal dari kata 'philosophia' (Yunani), yang berarti 'cinta kebijaksanaan'. Sedangkan dalam bahasa Inggris kata philosophy disebut sebagai 'filsafat', dan dalam bahasa Arab disebut 'falsafah', yang biasanya diterjemahkan sebagai 'cinta kebijaksanaan'.

Kehadiran buku ini diharapkan bisa mengisi kekosongan pembahasan sekitar materi-materi filsafat sejarah yang dianggap masih terasa langka. Meskipun sudah banyak orang membicarakan materi-materi dunia sejarah, namun yang membicarakan dari sudut pandang dan konstruksi filsafat dalam tiga substansi; profetik, spekulatif, dan kritis belum ada yang menyinergikannya. Umumnya buku-buku filsafat sejarah yang ditulis oleh penulis di Indonesia berkutat pada spekulatif dan kritis dengan uraian yang cukup panjang. Ada juga beberapa buku yang terkait dengan materi filsafat sejarah profetik, dengan mengambil bahan-bahan kajian dari Al-Qur’an dan al-Hadis, namun disajikan dengan cara terpisah-pisah sehingga menyulitkan para mahasiswa dalam memahaminya. Sering kali pula uraian-uraian filsafat sejarah yang disajikan sangat panjang, tidak mengutamakan substantifnya, bahkan terkesan bertele-tele sehingga seringkali membuat mahasiswa banyak mengeluh, karena sulitnya memahami pemikiran filsuf sejarah tersebut. Padahal substansi isinya yang mengandung sejumlah teori-teori penting harus dikembangkan dalam berbagai penalaran diskusi dan digunakan ke dalam pembacaan sejarah secara kritis. Belum lagi persoalan bagaimana penerapan teori filsafat sejarah untuk menganalisis peristiwa sejarah, selalu saja menjadi persoalan tersendiri. Semua problem tersebut pada akhirnya kembali menjadi tanggung jawab para pengajar atau dosen pengampu bidang filsafat sejarah; bagimana agar para mahasiswa mampu memahami dan dapat melakukan analisis sebuah peristiwa sejarah, dengan “kacamata” filsafat sejarah. Filsafat Sejarah merupakan salah satu mata kuliah wajib di Fakultas Filsafat Universitas Gadjah Mada. Filsafat Sejarah merupakan cabang filsafat khusus sebagaimana Filsafat Manusia, Filsafat Sosial, Filsafat Bahasa, Filsafat Seni, Filsafat Kebudayaan dan yang lainnya. Filsafat sejarah terutama meneliti azas-azas paling fundamental ataupun hakiki dalam proses historik sebagai keseluruhan dalam keanekaan peristiwa. Filsafat Sejarah juga disebut dengan istilah “metahistory”, mencoba memahami berbagai pola dan hukum dalam berbagai peristiwa. Filsafat Sejarah mengandaikan dan memperkembangkan dan meruncingkan bidang-bidang filsafat sistematik lainnya, seperti filsafat manusia, filsafat moral, filsafat sosial, dan filsafat kebudayaan. Filsafat sejarah meneliti dasar, azas-azas paling umum dan mutlak; artinya mengatasi pemahaman seperti dalam studi sejarah biasa. Filsafat Sejarah mencari “insight” yang lebih mutlak. Filsafat Sejarah kurang memperhatikan fakta-fakta, lebih memperhatikan relasi-relasi dan sebab-sebab yang hakiki dalam berbagai peristiwa historis. Fakta dari ilmu sejarah, oleh filsafat sejarah dipakai sebagai contoh atau ilustrasi belaka, bukan sebagai bukti. Ilmu sejarah dan filsafat sejarah saling melengkapi dan saling membutuhkan, namun tidak dapat disatukan secara logic, bukti dalam ilmu sejarah tidak dapat dipakai sebagai bukti bagi filsafat sejarah.; atau sebaliknya. Masing-masing mempunyai metode dan logikanya sendiri, dan hanya mempengaruhi satu sama lain secara psikologik. Ilmu sejarah juga bersandarkan ilmu-ilmu empirik lainnya, yang bersifat serupa dan yang bertaraf kurang lebih sama seperti; sosiologi, psikologi, antropologi budaya.

Karl Jaspers (1883–1969) was a German psychiatrist and philosopher and one of the most original European thinkers of the twentieth century. As a major exponent of existentialism in Germany, he had a strong influence on modern theology, psychiatry and philosophy. He was Hannah Arendt’s supervisor before her emigration to the United States in the 1930s and himself experienced the consequences of Nazi persecution. He was removed from his position at the University of Heidelberg in 1937, due to his wife being Jewish. Published in 1949, the year in which the Federal Republic of Germany was founded, The Origin and Goal of History is a vitally important book. It is renowned for Jaspers' theory of an 'Axial Age', running from the 8th to the 3rd century BCE. Jaspers argues that this period witnessed a remarkable flowering of new ways of thinking that appeared in Persia, India, China and the Greco-Roman world, in striking parallel development but without any obvious direct cultural contact between them. Jaspers identifies key thinkers from this age, including Confucius, Buddha, Zarathustra, Homer and Plato, who had a profound influence on the trajectory of future philosophies and religions. For Jaspers, crucially, it is here that we see the flowering of diverse philosophical beliefs such as scepticism, materialism, sophism, nihilism, and debates about good and evil, which taken together demonstrate human beings' shared ability to engage with universal, humanistic questions as opposed to those mired in nationality or authoritarianism. At a deeper level, The Origin and Goal of History provides a crucial philosophical framework for the liberal renewal of German intellectual life after 1945, and indeed of European intellectual life more widely, as a shattered continent attempted to find answers to what had happened in the preceding years.
