This book presents a comprehensive examination of the deregulation of financial markets that began in the United States in the mid-1960s and has now reached global proportions. The author examines the deregulatory steps taken in each of the major financial markets--the United States, Britain, Japan, Australia, and Hong Kong--exploring the impetus behind the deregulatory developments, their potency, and their effects on the operational, promotional, and allocational efficiency of financial markets. Khoury also assesses the effects of deregulation on the stability of financial markets and on the movement toward political and economic integration within these markets. Throughout, Khoury focuses particular attention on the dynamics of the deregulation process and the forces that generated it in each of the markets under study. Khoury begins by tracing the evolution of the internationalization of the financial markets and their deregulation over the last three decades. He then examines the economics of financial deregulation and the implications of regulatory changes. Four chapters are devoted to extended analysis of deregulation in the various financial centers. Khoury compares and contrasts the similarities and differences among the five markets, examines the impact of regulatory developments in each market, and analyzes the growing interrelationships among financial markets. A separate chapter looks at the effects of deregulation on the foreign exchange, money, and stock markets, and on the performance and stability of the banking sector. Finally, Khoury looks to the future of deregulation, describing the changes that are likely to occur in the regulatory structure and in the money and capital markets. Ideal as supplemental reading for courses in international finance and banking, this book also offers bankers and regulators new insights into the potential and actual effects of various regulatory and deregulatory measures.

The Dynamics Of Asian Financial Integration written by Michael Devereux and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-05-03 with Business & Economics categories.

The ongoing global financial crisis has manifested a remarkable degree of global financial integration—and its implications—for emerging Asian financial markets. The current crisis will not and should not deter the progress that the region has made toward financial openness and integration. However, events like this clearly demonstrate that financial liberalization and integration is not without risks. Hence, emerging Asian economies' growing financial ties have motivated us to look closer at the repercussions of increased financial integration and evaluate the benefits of risk sharing and better access to international capital markets against the costs of cross-border financial contagion. The crisis also presents a timely opportunity for the region’s policy makers to rethink their strategies for financial deregulation and liberalization and to reconsider a next step to integrate emerging East Asia’s financial markets further. However, doing so requires deeper understanding of financial market integration. While much has been said in both academic and policy circles about financial globalization and regional financial integration as separate areas of study, existing research has been relatively silent on the dynamics between these two distinctive forces. The book addresses this gap in financial literature and assesses financial integration in emerging East Asia at both regional and global levels. The publication studies the factors driving the progress of regional financial integration in relation to financial globalization and identifies the relevant policy challenges facing emerging market economies in the region. Chapters look into three broad aspects of regional and global financial market integration: (i) measurement of regional and global financial integration, (ii) understanding dynamics of regional financial integration versus global financial integration, and (iii) welfare implications from regional financial market integration amid financial globalization. Against this context, academics, policy makers, and other readers will appreciate the rigorous research contribution provided by the book.

As the globalization of financial markets continues, we urgently need to understand the crises that have plagued these markets and the policies best suited to preventing such crises in the future. In this book, a prominent group of economists and policymakers blend conceptual analysis and policy discussion in seven well-integrated papers, analyzing the nature of capital flows, alternative exchange-rate regimes, and the roles of international financial institutions. After a guided tour by the editor and a historical exploration, some of the world's leading theorists and policy analysts examine the benefits and pitfalls of capital movements and controls. In the second portion, papers examine the recent experiences of Argentina and Mexico, with Charles Calomiris—whose proposals for a new world financial architecture have elicited wide attention—contributing a response. The volume concludes with a roundtable discussion of the report of the International Financial Institutions Advisory Commission, in which the chair of the commission, Allan H. Meltzer, both comments on the report and responds to questions about it. The material presented here will become a standard reference for analysts, policymakers, and the interested general public. Contributors: Leonardo Auernheimer, Matthew Bishop, Michael D. Bordo, Charles Calomiris, Guillermo A. Calvo, Augustin Carstens, Michael P. Dooley, Pablo E. Guidotti, T. Britton Harris, John P. Lipsky, Guillermo Ortiz Martinez, Allan H. Meltzer, Andrew Powell, Rene Stulz, Carl E. Walsh
