Nazi Germany utilized every available resource to fight the Second World War, and one significant weapon in Hitler's economic arsenal was gold - gold looted from the central banks of those European countries which were occupied by the Nazi regime between 1939 and 1942. Calculated at pre-1939 prices, the Germans gained access to about $625 million (US) in monetary gold, only about half of which was recovered by American Forces in April 1945 from a mine in central Germany. The 'Gold War' did not end then, however; it just assumed a different shape. Instead of fuelling Hitler's war effort, the recovered gold soon became a pawn in the Cold War struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union and has remained a controversial issue in international politics for years, one not completely resolved to this day.Although this is an important aspect of the Second World War and its aftermath, it has been largely neglected in historical research because of the lack of adequate source materials. The author succeeded in gaining access to hitherto unavailable but crucial records from archives in West Germany, Britain and the United States and is thus in a position to piece together, for the first time, the story of the Nazi gold loot and the long, complicated restitution of part of this gold by the Western Allies. Hitler's Gold represents an essential contribution to the economic history of the Second World War.

War is a costly business and in 1939, Germany was almost broke with its economy overheating and heading for runaway inflation. Hitler needed hard foreign currency to pay for his war machine and the only way he could get this was by selling gold that he looted from the national banks of Austria, Czechoslovakia and all the countries that were occupied after September 1939. Another source of gold was the theft of personal gold especially from the Jews, most grotesquely, the haul of dental gold which came out of the concentration camps. No neutral country would accept Reichsmarks so the gold had to be laundered through Swiss banks. The story of Swiss complicity in German war crimes is still a subject of controversy, and lawsuits. There are also questions about the parts played by other countries, particularly Portugal, in laundering stolen gold for the Nazis. The Vatican’s dealings with Hitler have often been seen as ambiguous and this book investigates the Holy See’s role in helping ship Nazi gold to South America, and how that gold might have been used to re-create the German Reich. After the war a commission was set up to recover as much gold as possible and restore it to those from whom it was stolen. This, of course, was beset by huge problems especially with regards to gold that was looted from Holocaust victims. Enormous quantities of gold and other treasures were hidden in a mine at Merkers in Thuringia which was found by the US 3rd Army in 1945, but much gold remains unaccounted for, and attempts are still ongoing to uncover supposed hidden caches, the most recent in Poland where four tons are believed to have been found by the Silesian Bridge Foundation in May of 2022. The whereabouts and disposal of the remaining stolen gold has led to numerous investigations and countless conspiracy theories. In Hitler’s Gold the author analyzes these and uncovers many of the mysteries surrounding this continuing search for the missing millions.

Award-winning journalist Isabel Vincent unravels the labyrinthine story behind the headlines by taking us through the life of survivor Renée Appel, who found refuge in Canada. With her, we come to understand what it means to wait for justice: how, on the eve of war, desperate men and women entrusted their life savings to Swiss banks; how Nazis laundered gold looted from Jewish families; how the demands of international business, Swiss bank secrecy, and greed kept the truth hidden for over half a century and still prevent restitution from being made. Hitler's Silent Partners is a rigorous and often heartbreaking look at statistics seldom given a human face.

Nazi Gold written by Ian Sayer and has been published by Mainstream Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Bank robberies categories.

A rather breathless account, first published in 1984 and updated for this edition, of what happened to the 'Nazi gold' (and gold currency bonds, bank notes of various countries, coins, jewelry, paintings, and other goodies) that disappeared in the last days of the Third Reich. The immediate cause of its dispersal lay in a raid on Berlin on February 3, 1945 by nearly a thousand Flying Fortress bombers. The Reichsbank took 21 direct hits, and shortly thereafter the bulk of the gold reserves, weighing around 100 tons and requiring thirteen railway flat cars to transport them, were stored in a deep mine at Merkers, 200 miles southwest of Berlin. On April 4, this site was overrun by Patton's Third Army, which captured gold and currency worth some $315 million at 1945 prices, in addition to 400 tons of paintings, the 3,000-year-old Egyptian statuette of Queen Nefertiti, and two million books. Sayer and Botting (Hitler's Last General, not reviewed, etc.) deal with what remained. They estimate the overall total of funds missing or stolen at $433 million, worth nearly $4 billion today. That figure includes $3.6 billion in gold currency bonds seized by Red Army Intelligence, and quietly and efficiently marketed in later years (an intriguing episode unfortunately neglected here), and seven tons of gold from the German Foreign Office which the authors located in the Bank of England. A colorful crew of characters circle around or disappear with the remainder, but often Sayer and Botting get bogged down tracing two bars of gold here or voicing dark suspicions about what is being covered up by the US Occupation authorities there. Indeed, much of the latter part of their story deals less with Nazi gold than with the high living of occupation troops in Germany. Vivid investigative reporting is obscured by dust and cobwebs. For the entire history of human civilization, gold has enraptured people around the globe. The Nazis was no less enthralled by it, and felt that gold was the solution to funding Hitler's war machine. Gold was also on the mind of FDR across the Atlantic, as he worked with Europe's other leaders to bring the United States and the rest of the world out of a severe depression. FDF was hardly the first head of state to turn to gold in difficult times. Throughout history, it has been the refuge of both nations and people in trouble, working at times when nothing else does. Desperate people can buy a loaf of bread or bribe a border guard. Gold can get desperate nations oil to keep tanks running or munitions to fight a war. If the price is right, there is always someone somewhere willing to buy or sell gold. And it was to become the Nazi's most important medium of exchange during the war. Chasing Gold is the story of how the Nazis attempted to grab Europe’s gold to finance history’s bloodiest war. It is filled with high drama and close escapes, laying bare the palate of human emotions. Walking through the tale are giants of world history, as well as ordinary people called upon to undertake heroic action in an extraordinary time.

After a brief investigation in 1945, a British secret agent concluded that Hitler and Braun committed suicide together in the Führerbunker in Berlin shortly before the fall of the German capital and were cremated immediately afterwards, although he had no concrete evidence to support this hypothesis. Nevertheless, this has been the official version ever since. Between 1945 and 2009, however, testimony and evidence began to emerge that suggested otherwise. Luc Vanhixe, criminologist and retired senior-level officer of the Belgian Federal Police, conducted a seven-year modern police investigation into the death of this notorious couple, based on all the original data and traces. And as unlikely as it may sound, this investigation shows with absolute certainty that Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun did not die together in the Berlin Führerbunker on April 30, 1945.

Germany's financial collapse in the summer of 1931 was one of the biggest economic catastrophes of modern history. It led to a global panic, brought down the international monetary system, and turned a worldwide recession into a prolonged depression. The crisis also contributed decisively to the rise of Hitler. Within little more than a year of its onset, the Nazis were Germany's largest political party at both the regional and national level, paving the way for Hitler's eventual seizure of power in January 1933. The origins of the collapse lay in Germany's large pile of foreign debt denominated in gold-backed currencies, which condemned the German government to cut spending, raise taxes, and lower wages in the middle of a worldwide recession. As political resistance to this policy of austerity grew, the German government began to question its debt obligations, prompting foreign investors to panic and sell their German assets. The resulting currency crisis led to the failure of the already weakened banking system and a partial sovereign default. Hitler managed to profit from the crisis because he had been the most vocal critic of the reparation regime responsible for the lion's share of German debts. As the financial system collapsed, his relentless attacks against foreign creditors and the alleged complicity of the German government resonated more than ever with the electorate. The ruling parties that were responsible for the situation lost their credibility and became defenceless in the face of his onslaught against an establishment allegedly selling the country out to her foreign creditors. Meanwhile, these creditors hesitated too long to take the wind out of Hitler's sails by offering debt relief. In this way, a financial crisis soon developed into a political catastrophe for both Europe and the world.
