"This is an important collection and starting point for the worthy goal of promoting a better understanding of the past that makes it less able to be manipulated for contemporary political and religious aims...Compiled out of the European past, its aim of a better understanding of traditional values ought to be useful for contemporary cultures and for the work of scholars of all cultures and continents." - Renaissance Quarterly In the last decade or so, many books have been devoted to the history of Europe. Two conceptual axes predominate in a large number of these accounts: a discourse focusing on Europe's values, and another discourse, fashioned largely in opposition to the first, which emphasizes the process of European "construction." The first conceives of Europe's past teleologically, as a process by which certain values (Christian ethics, individualism, capitalism, tolerance, republicanism, due process, etc.) were affirmed and came to define European culture. The second approach rejects the discourse on values emphasizes the post-Enlightenment emergence of the concept of Europe, and the political and ideological implications in its continuous redefinitions (and re elaborations) during the past two or more centuries. This volume offers new approaches that integrate the long temporal dimension of the values-based approach, albeit devoid of its teleological element, with the "constructivist" interpretation.

The 2004 and 2007 enlargements pushed the EU's external border further east as well as closer to unstable areas in the western Balkans. With future enlargements unlikely in the short-term, the EU faces new challenges in securing stable relationships with these neighbouring countries, while not fostering false hopes of early accession.

Excerpt from Finding the Worth-While in Europe To be hampered by a sense of duty is to destroy effectually the pleasure of a European tour. I mean by that if you visit merely the places you think you ought to see because they are famous, instead of the places you really wish to go to because they will interest you, then your trip will be spoiled. If you are not the least interested in pictures, it is a rather foolish waste of time to be bored by the galleries; and if you delight in old castles, why go to the modem cities? And if you want to find the quaint and medieval villages, where life and environment are completely at variance with your own, why not go there? Now in no sense is this book intended to usurp the place of indispensable Baedeker, nor does it profess to enumerate, much less describe, all that is worth while in Europe; no one volume could do that. Chiefly do I try to tell the reader where to go in each land to find the things that distinguish that land from his own and from other countries, the things that are unlike the things, or are better worth-while than the same kind of things to be found elsewhere. Studying the im/mobility trajectories of West Africans in the EU, this book presents a new approach to West African migrants in Europe. It argues that a migration lens is not necessarily the best starting point to understand these dynamic im/mobility processes. Rather than seeing migrancy as the primary marker of their lives, this book positions these trajectories in a wider social script of mobility and discusses how African migrants are confronted with rigid mobility regimes, but also how they manage to transgress and circumvent them.
